Literatures have shown no significant differences between traditional NPD and virtual NPD in general. New product development especially for SMEs virtual team are somewhat lacking in the literature and constitute a research gap. This paper aims to bridge this gap. This study first reviews the NPD and its relationship with virtuality and then identifies the critical factors in definition of NPD in SMEs virtual team. The statistical method was utilized to perform the required analysis of the data from survey. The results are achieved through factor analysis at the perspective of NPD in some of Malaysian and Iranian manufacturing firms. The 20 new product development factors were grouped into five higher level constructs. It gives valuable insight and guidelines which hopefully will help managers of firms in developing countries to consider the main factors in NPD. Virtual Team Leaders: Are You the Life of the Party? | Virtual Team Builder - Blog - 0 views

"It shouldn't be difficult for you to imagine the last party you attended as we come out of the holiday season. Maybe you have a few standout memories of that special occasion: the food might have been delicious, the decorations, beautiful, and you might have found yourself immersed in the most interesting conversation ever with another guest. However, I'm willing to bet that those details would have meant very little without an outstanding host to tie everything together. We all know a great party host creates a safe and interesting environment for their guests and makes everyone's comfort level their top priority. Actually, when it comes down to it, an effective virtual leader possesses the very same qualities and demonstrates the same behaviours. When we really think about it, every great party host has a number of personal characteristics that enable them to be the centre of the party, providing everyone with energy, inspiration, and the ability to simply be themselves. He or she is interested in building a relationship with every guest; similarly, an effective virtual team leader builds relationships with the team members. A good party host will ask their guests questions; this is an indicator of politeness and also puts people at ease and makes them feel valued. Your host may ask "How was the drive over?" or "Have you seen any interesting movies lately?" Naturally, a virtual leader is also interested in putting their team members at ease and making them feel valued. In a virtual team situation, this involves keeping the lines of communication open; asking team members questions about the progress of their tasks or whether they need assistance. Open communication also means virtual leaders should reply to questions and issues that are raised by their team members in a timely and clear manner. An effective party host also has an unmistakable presence at their party; often, this involves achieving a balance between being overly involved with their

Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team | BostInno - 0 views

" Creating a Company Culture with a Virtual Team July 11th, 2012 by Caroline McAlpine Posted in company culture, Management, teams, Virtual Worker Beehive Media +1 0 1 inShare When I arrived at Beehive Media last fall to take on my new role as the Client Services Director, one corporate behavior I had to quickly shed and transform was having historically only managed a core team face-to-face. Beehive Media's team is a virtual one - geographically dispersed in the greater Boston and New York areas, as well as Ukraine. Experts have studied virtual teams for the last three decades and from everything I've seen and read in the last six months, managing one is both an art and a science (sometimes a hair raising science - our CEO has no hair…coincidence?) A lot goes into managing a team across great distances, but with practice, a virtual team can be a great thing. When considering your virtual team, key questions arise such as when should we meet face-to-face? How will we communicate? What software solutions will help us manage and complete our work? How do you manage a virtual team's workload? When should we meet face-to-face? Convening a virtual team face-to-face makes complete sense; the real question to immediately ask is when and why. When you consider the stages of team development (organizational development) -forming, storming, norming, performing and adjourning (based on Bruce Tuckman's model)-it's most critical to meet as a team in the beginning when it's newly formed. It's important to meet early since people don't know each other. It's also an opportunity to create a team culture with norms, establish ground rules and expectations. Finally it's key to start to develop integral relationships among team members. Of course it's also key to meet face to face at critical points in a project - some things are better solved in person. Identifying these times is key and better to err on the side of meeting too often at the begi

Why Virtual Teams Fail | OnPoint Consulting llc - 0 views

"Why Virtual Teams Fail October 2nd, 2012 | Posted in Collaborating And Leading From A Distance by admin Virtual teams are more prevalent than ever. Advances in technology have made it easier to organize and manage dispersed groups of people. And competitive pressures and the needs of today's global market workforce have made virtual teams a necessity for some organizations. But the fact that virtual teams continue to grow in popularity doesn't mean they're always being used and managed properly. We found that many organizations simply recycle the same guidelines for t co-located teams and hope for the best. And frankly, that system wasn't working. But why are so many virtual teams falling to meet performance expectations? To answer this question, we asked hundreds of virtual team members and leaders to select the top three challenges that hinder their teams' performance. Here's what we found. Lack of face-to-face contact was cited as the top challenge. However, we did find that lack of face-to-face contact was less of an issue for teams that had an initial face-to-face meeting within the first 30-90 days of working virtually together. Overall, these teams were more effective than teams that never met up front. Communication was a close second. Many people reported that members of their teams changed monthly and having team members that are here today and gone tomorrow makes it difficult to find the most effective ways to communicate with one another and to build relationships effectively. Large teams of people with unclear roles was also seen as a key challenge. Add to the frequent change in team members the fact that often people are invited to be on a given team solely because of political reasons, not because they are meant to contribute in a specific way and what we found is that many organizations ended up with large teams of people whose roles are unclear. Given the importance of virtual teamwork, we were surprised by how many teams are

Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers. Nowadays, companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness. Despite virtual teams growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions of virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams, different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considerin

" RUNNING EFFECTIVE VIRTUAL TEAM MEETINGS - QUESTION 4 OF 4 Posted by Yael Zofi on Leading Virtual Meetings ChallengesWith the rise of virtual teams, I have had the opportunity over the past two years to run numerous webinars for professional groups and organizations on issues related to managing in the virtual space. Last month I conducted a webcast for AMA titled How to Effectively Lead Virtual Team Meetings which focused on successful practices for leading virtual meetings with full participant engagement. Attendees asked many interesting questions, which I believe are relevant to many of you. Therefore, I dedicated September's posts to answering selected questions asked by participants on this topic. Please click here to read the three prior questions and my comments. This fourth blog post on the topic focuses on handling challenging personalities during meetings, and concludes with what I call my 'golden rule' of cross cultural collaboration. As always, you can comment or send me a personal question via email: yael@aim-strategies.com, Facebook or LinkedIn. Question: Dealing with Dominant Personalities During Virtual Meetings "A few individuals do most of the talking during the virtual meeting, which crowds out others or discourages them. How do I handle dominant personalities that wish to either take over the discussion or override others' ideas?" Answer: If you don't want one person to dominate, it's up to you to monitor who is actively participating, and to (1) intervene when one person hogs air time and (2) engage everyone in the discussion, even if some participants say very little. As soon as you believe someone is dominating the discussion intervene immediately. For example, say, "Thanks, for making that point. Let's have Larry's take on that issue." Here are some other group dynamics to watch out for: Team discussions turning negative and personal Team members not contributing to the discussion

The study focused on the influence of virtual research and development (R&D) teams within Malaysian manufacturing small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs). The specific objective of the study is better understanding of the application of collaborative technologies in business, to find the effective factors to assist SMEs to remain competitive in the future. The paper stresses to find an answer for a question "Is there any relationship between company size, Internet connection facility and virtuality?". The survey data shows SMEs are now technologically capable of performing the virtual collaborative team, but the infrastructure usage is less. SMEs now have the necessary technology to begin the implementation process of collaboration tools to reduce research and development (R&D) time, costs and increase productivity. So, the manager of R&D should take the potentials of virtual teams into account. Virtual R&D Teams in Small and Medium Enterprises: A Literature Review - 0 views

" [Paper] Virtual R&D Teams in Small and Medium Enterprises: A Literature Review (Citations: 1) Nader Ale Ebrahim, Shamsuddin Ahmed, Zahari Taha Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) are the driving engine behind economic growth. While SMEs play a critical role in generating employment and supporting trade, they face numerous challenges, the prominent among them are the need to respond to fasting time-to-market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Towards that end, research and development (R&D) aspect deserves particular attention to promote and facilitate the operations of SMEs. Virtual R&D team could be a viable option. However, literature shows that virtual R&D teaming in SMEs is still at its infancy. This article provides a comprehensive literature review on different aspects of virtual R&D teams collected from the reputed publications. The purpose of the state-of-the-art literature review is to provide an overview on the structure and dynamics of R&D collaboration in SMEs. Specifying the foundation and importance of virtual teams, the relationship between virtual R&D team and SMEs has been examined. It concludes with the identification of the gaps in the existing literatures and calls for future research. It is argued that setting-up an infrastructure for virtual R&D team in SMEs still requires a large amount of engineering efforts and deserves consideration at top level management. Published in 2010. "VTMM - Virtual Team Maturity Model AUTHOR(S) Friedrich, Ralf; Bleimann, Udo; Stengel, Ingo; Walsh, Paul PUB. DATE January 2011 SOURCE Proceedings of the European Conference on Management, Leadership;2011, p159 SOURCE TYPE Conference Proceeding DOC. TYPE Article ABSTRACT As virtual teamwork becomes more and more widely used the performance of many virtual teams is still low and initiatives improving virtual team performance are often ignored (Kostner, 1998, Lipnack and Stamps, 2000, Stger and Thomas, 2007). One of the reasons is the lack of a reference model against which virtual teams can be assessed and gaps in the performance can be identified and closed. In two rounds of control group experiments, carried-out in 2010 and 2011 and an organisational analysis of a global engineering organisation in 2011, it was identified that a gap in performance is closely related to inappropriate behaviours of team leaders and team members in a virtual environment. VTMM - Virtual Team Maturity Model addresses this gap. It is designed to assess the current maturity of a virtual team and proposes clear steps to improve the virtual team performance quickly. This is achieved through a set of pre-defined virtual team processes. Implementing these processes will lead to a new behaviours applied by all members of the virtual team and this new behaviour will lead then to increased team performance. The increased performance can be measured in maturity levels, showing evidence of the degree of implementation of the virtual team processes. In addition to the processes, VTMM offers two best practice libraries: One for virtual team tools and one for virtual team culture. "Chris Ducker: The Art of Managing a Virtual Team By Thursday Bram Nov. 9, 2010, 9:00am PT 3 Comments inShare Chris Ducker has made an art out of outsourcing. He not only writes about effectively building virtual business systems and teams at Virtual Business Lifestyle, but he also operates Virtual Staff Finder. Ducker's in-depth knowledge of how to work with team members who may be on the other side of the world gives him special insight into managing teams virtually. He answered a few questions for us about his process. Thursday Bram: How do you make sure that, day in and day out, the team members you work with virtually stay on top of your projects? Chris Ducker: I use a project management system that I had one of my staff program - it's very close to Basecamp, but watered-down. I also have my personal assistant speak with them on a daily basis, too. I am not a major slave-driver with my virtual assistants. I allow them to pretty much do whatever they want, and work whenever they want‚ just as long as the work itself gets done and to the high level that I expect. Thursday: What training or tools do you think someone interested in working with a team virtually needs? Ducker: This really changes from one case to another. For some it can be very little, for others, quite intense. For sure, the virtual assistants have to be very, very web savvy. They should know their way around all the social networking sites properly, blogging tools, and be able to use Google and Google Apps. Training can be done mostly via videos on YouTube and perhaps some more personalized screencasts that you can make with software like Jing, for example. I also use Dropbox for all of the sharing and back-up needs that we have, too. Thursday: What problems do you commonly see with organizations or individuals interested in working with a virtual assistant? Ducker: It has to be that they believe that one single virtual assistant is going to be able to perform like a team, and do
