By jaclynkostner On April 25, 2012 · Add Comment · In Virtual Collaboration, Virtual Leadership, Virtual Meetings, Virtual Relationship Building, Virtual Relationships, Virtual Team Collaboration, Virtual Team Trust, Virtual Team Trust-Building, Virtual Teamwork online meetings, virtual relationships, virtual community Virtual teams need more than a technical connection to work effectively together. What are the most important factors effective virtual leaders use to engage their virtual team to high performance? If your virtual team has little to no travel, five core factors drive a virtual team to be inspired, engaged, and connected on an interpersonal level when people are remote from each other. Here are five best practices that virtual leaders must do right when people are NOT face-to-face. Align your virtual team behind the "moment of truth," not just vision, mission, and goals. Stop micromanaging tasks! Instead, raise and focus your team's energy and passion to deliver a consistent "moment of truth" that pleases your virtual team's customers, internally or externally. Future blog posts will tell you more about this proven success factor that transforms work into joy and delivers consistent, excellent results when the leader can't be there to supervise the work. Vigorously collaborate in weekly web conference meetings. Is everyone is multi-tasking on other things during your weekly conference call or web conference meeting? Multi-tasking in online meetings is out of control today. It's the #1 symptom of collaboration failure. Connecting once a week through an audio bridge or a web conference link is not collaboration. Collaboration is the magic that happens when the team uses its collective knowledge, perspectives, and insights to create something unique and better together. The surprise is that virtual collaboration can be BETTER than face-to-face colla

Published in: In: 2nd Seminar on Engineering and Information Technology, (SEIT 2009), Universiti Malaysia Sabah, Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, Malaysia. (8. July 2009): pp. 191-196. [img] PDF MPRA_paper_27374.pdf Download (430Kb) | Preview Abstract In today's dynamic marketplace, companies are under strong pressure to introduce new products for long-term survival with their competitors. Besides, every company cannot cope up progressively or immediately with the market requirements due to knowledge dynamics being experienced in competitive milieu. Increased competition and reduced product life cycles put force upon companies to develop new products faster. In response to this pressing need there should be some new approach compatible in flexible circumstances. This paper presents a solution based on the Stage-Gate system, which is closely linked with virtual team approach. Virtual teams can provide a platform to advance the knowledge-base in a company and thus to reduce time-to-market. This article introduces conceptual product development architecture under a virtual-team umbrella. The paper describes all the major aspects of new product development (NPD), NPD process and its relationship with virtual team, Stage-Gate system and finally presents a modified Stage-Gate system. It also provides the guidelines for the successful implementation of virtual team in new products development. Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics and Effectiveness - 0 views

"Bridging Space Over Time: Global Virtual Team Dynamics and Effectiveness Martha L. Maznevski (martha@virginia.edu) and Katherine M. Chudoba (kchudoba@cob.fsu.edu) + Author Affiliations McIntire School of Commerce, University of Virginia, Charlottesville, Virginia 22903-2493 College of Business, Florida State University, Tallahassee, Florida 32306-1110 Abstract Global virtual teams are internationally distributed groups of people with an organizational mandate to make or implement decisions with international components and implications. They are typically assigned tasks that are strategically important and highly complex. They rarely meet in person, conducting almost all of their interaction and decision making using communications technology. Although they play an increasingly important role in multinational organizations, little systematic is known about their dynamics or effectiveness. This study built a grounded theory of global virtual team processes and performance over time. We built a template based on Adaptive Structuration Theory (DeSanctis and Poole 1994) to guide our research, and we conducted a case study, observing three global virtual teams over a period of 21 months. Data were gathered using multiple methods, and qualitative methods were used to analyze them and generate a theory of global virtual team dynamics and effectiveness. First, we propose that effective global virtual team interaction comprises a series of communication incidents, each configured by aspects of the team's structural and process elements. Effective outcomes were associated with a fit among an interaction incident's form, decision process, and complexity. Second, effective global virtual teams sequence these incidents to generate a deep rhythm of regular face-to-face incidents interspersed with less intensive, shorter incidents using various media. These two insights are discussed with respect to other literature and are elaborated upon in several proposit

Virtual multicultural teams: real communication in the virtual world - Daily news in En... - 0 views

"Virtual multicultural teams: real communication in the virtual world Intercultural | Irina Budrina | August 8, 2011 8:43 am The following situation sounds common enough for Romania, a country which has been chosen by many companies as their outsource location. The cheaper and more skilled labor force, plus the expansion of online technologies make it easy for Romanians to tele work with colleagues in other countries. But how easy is it to communicate with them? By Irina Budrina Let's start from the following situation: A company based in the United States develops multimedia software with a team of 7 free-lance developers located in 3 different countries, including Romania. The team was formed through Internet chat groups or interpersonal relations and is completely virtual. All developers are under commercial contract with the main company. The company has no offices and developers have never met with each other. All employees tele-work from home and informally communicate through electronic means. Each developer has specific tasks and is in charge of one part of the software development. They plan the work together at the beginning of each project. They work on the same data file and post their contributions on a collaborative platform. The company's job is to assemble the different pieces developed by the tele-workers. Many companies use virtual teams of geographically dispersed people to work on short- and long-term projects. A long-term "virtual" team is one that conducts its work almost entirely through electronic technology. Such technology and the expansion of global business have changed the work environment for organizations of all sizes, allowing even small companies to compete in the international market place. Communicating across cultures using technology can be a difficult task. It requires understanding the advantages and limitations of technology and how to build relationships via technology. Though it gives an opportunity for fre

Global and localized virtual R&D teams are believed to have high potential for the growth of SMEs. Due to the fast-growing complexity of new products coupled with new emerging opportunities of virtual teams, a collaborative approach is believed to be the future trend. This research explores the effectiveness of virtuality in SMEs' virtual R&D teams. Online questionnaires were emailed to Malaysian manufacturing SMEs and 74 usable questionnaires were received, representing a 20.8 percent return rate. In order to avoid biases which may result from pre-suggested answers, a series of open-ended questions were retrieved from the experts. This study was focused on analyzing an open-ended question, whereby four main themes were extracted from the experts' recommendations regarding the effectiveness of virtual teams for the growth and performance of SMEs. The findings of this study would be useful to product design managers of SMEs in order to realize the key advantages and significance of virtual R&D teams during the new product development (NPD) process. This is turn, leads to increased effectiveness in new product development's procedure. Keywords Virtual Teams . New Product Development . Survey Fin

"Virtual Teams: From Merely Working Together to Truly Collaborating with One Another. 1 Posted by Sebastian Reiche | Posted on Jan 17, 2013 Category : Cases, Comments and Current Trends Tags: cultural diversity, distant leadership, global leadership, global organizations, virtual teams 'It's like monopoly on a global scale, with people, factories, offices, and ideas, crisscrossing the world to get the job done in time and on budget'. In my opinion, this metaphor that a recent CNN article mentioned serves as a fitting description for today's globally dispersed business environment, and as a great introduction for a blog post on global virtual teams. As global businesses adjust to these 'monopoly' settings, managing global virtual teams quickly becomes the norm. Although they are very attractive cost wise, and may also help to save time , managing global virtual teams effectively is still a challenge. There is limited face-to-face interaction, work occurs across different time zones, and collaboration involves different cultural and language backgrounds - all of which make virtual teamwork and virtual leadership quite a difficult task. This is probably one reason for why entering 'virtual team' into any Internet search engine results in a sheer endless number of publications with 'to do' and 'top tips' lists in their headings. And although the majority of recommendations for managing traditional teams would also serve well for virtual teams (e.g. specify roles, create a common meaningful goal, value all team members), the differences should be evident. Lacking face-to-face interaction makes virtual teams much more vulnerable to 'merely working together' instead of truly collaborating with one another. What happens naturally in groups who see each other daily should be deliberately fostered in remote virtual groups. In this context, a relevant HBR blog article suggests that global team leaders must deliberately create 'moments'.

"Assessing the Quality of Collaboration in Virtual Teams Posted in June 12th, 2008 by Betsy Carroll in Challenges, Collaboration, Leadership, Teamwork For those who are interested in virtual team collaboration, the concept of teamwork is crucial. But rarely is "teamwork" actually defined. Just as the adage goes, we know it when we see it, but we may have trouble explicitly saying what makes for good teamwork. This week, Surinder sent me an academic journal article by Martin Hoegl and Hans Georg Gemuenden that has great practical application for defining what good collaboration or teamwork consists of. The authors call their concept "teamwork quality", and define it in terms of 6 facets. They are: Communication Coordination Balance of member contributions Mutual support Effort Cohesion The authors found evidence that teamwork quality is related both to team performance (defined by quality and efficiency) and personal success of team members (defined by satisfaction and learning). This post, based on that article, has two pieces. First, I will briefly define and describe each facet of teamwork quality. This should be useful for people in the field to assess the quality of their virtual teamwork. Second, I will discuss some ways to foster teamwork quality when the team is virtual, something the authors of the article don't specifically discuss. Please note that the term "teamwork quality" in this article does not include the nature of the team's task or the quality of interactions with others outside the team - it is only about the processes within a team. 1. Communication: How frequent, informal, direct, and open is your team's communication? Generally, more frequent communication is productive, but this should be relative to what is sufficient or necessary for the task. The authors describe informal communication as being more spontaneous. Direct communication happens when people talk to one another rather than relayi

[more] In the competitive market, virtual teams represent a growing response to the need for fasting time-to-market, low-cost and rapid solutions to complex organizational problems. Virtual teams enable organizations to pool the talents and expertise of employees and non-employees by eliminating time and space barriers. Nowadays, companies are heavily investing in virtual team to enhance their performance and competitiveness. Despite virtual teams growing prevalence, relatively little is known about this new form of team. Hence the study offers an extensive literature review with definitions of virtual teams and a structured analysis of the present body of knowledge of virtual teams. First, we distinguish virtual teams from conventional teams, different types of virtual teams to identify where current knowledge applies. Second, we distinguish what is needed for effective virtual team considering the people, process and technology point of view and underlying characteristics of virtual teams and challenges they entail. Finally, we have identified and extended 12 key factors that need to be considered, and describes a methodology focused on supporting virtual team working, with a new approach that has not been specifically addressed in the existing literature and some guide line for future research extracted. [less] Person:  Ale Ebrahim, Nader; Ahmed, Shamsuddin; Taha, Zahari Institution:  Volkswirtschaftliche Fakultät, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Series:  MPRA PaperMPRA Paper Subject:  Virtual team; Literature review; Effective virtual team Classification:  jel-L11; jel-O32; jel-M12; jel-L1; jel-L7; jel-O1; jel-M11; htt
