Under the program Research and Innovation Network for Europe and Africa (RINEA), Africans can apply for mobility grants to promote business, technological, and research partnerships in Europe. The current call focuses on Food Nutrition Security and Sustainable Agriculture, and related fields. The program offers three match-making events, one in Italy and two in Denmark, for which applications are invited from African SMEs, universities, research institutions, and other R&I organizations. The application deadline is 29 April 2016.

"Près de 50 universitaires, experts politiques, gestionnaires et représentants d'agences d'aide au développement se sont rassemblés à Marseille les 1er et 2 juillet 2013 pour une réunion dans le cadre du programme IHERD (Innovation, enseignement supérieur et recherche pour le développement) de l'OCDE, financé par l'agence suédoise de coopération internationale pour le développement (SIDA). Cette réunion a eu pour thème « Améliorer les approches fondées sur des données factuelles pour faciliter la conception et la mise en œuvre de politiques d'innovation et de recherche dans les pays en développement ». Parmi les thèmes abordés figuraient notamment : l'établissement de liens entre ces trois piliers, l'importance du travail en réseau, le rôle des universités de recherche, la collaboration Sud- Sud, les financements concurrentiels, les capacités et les stratégies de recherche dans les pays en développement, et le mandat des centres d'excellence. Le programme IHERD s'articule autour de deux communautés de recherche : les études sur l'enseignement supérieur et les politiques de recherche (ou scientifiques). "The key message of the 2014 EFA Global Monitoring Report on teaching and learning was very clear: there is a global learning crisis. Despite efforts to improve universal access to education, 250 million children are not learning even the basic skills, let alone the skills they need to thrive in the world of work. The report underlines that more efforts should be made to ensure that children actually learn when they go to school, which can be achieved when governments invest in well-qualified and motivated teachers (UNESCO, 2014)."

"The largest European Commission research project is being developed to enhance the European aquaculture production by removing production bottlenecks of emerging species, producing new products and accessing new markets. It is Diversify project, which is funded under the 7th Framework Programme of the European Commission and had its kickoff meeting at the Hellenic Center for Marine Research in Greece in January 2014. Coordinated by Dr. Constantinos C Mylonas of the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture, a total of 38 partners from Spain, France, Italy, Greece, Israel, Belgium, The Netherlands, Denmark, Norway, the United Kingdom, Germany and Hungary have participated in this 5-year-long research. The Netherlands is represented by Wageningen University's DLO, The National Institute for Fisheries Studies and the Technical University of Eindhoven."

"University of Milan-Bicocca, Milan, 14-16 October 2015 Around the world far too many young people are not in employment, education or training (NEET). Roughly one third of the world's youth are unemployed, looking for work or they are discouraged and therefore inactive. Unemployment rates among young people are particularly high in the Middle East and North Africa. In general, the youth is more vulnerable in economic crises and is disadvantaged on the labour market because they have less working experience and are less skilful in application processes than adults. Besides, one cause for high rates of youth unemployment is the mismatch between labour supply and labour demand. This goes along with a lack of labour market services focussed on the needs of young people. In this context the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), in collaboration with the Secretariat of the Union for the Mediterranean (UfM), has developed the new Global Initiative on Innovative Labour Market Services for Youth."

This month we're featuring the second interview, which was conducted in person with Professor Philippe Lebailly, who works in the Economy and Rural Development Department at the University of Gembloux in Belgium. In collaboration with CORAF/WECARD and Canada's IDRC, IITA will support 20 individuals for PhD and masters research in agriculture for development in West and Central Africa. Applications are invited from qualified individuals in Chad, Dem Rep Congo, Sierra Leone, and Togo who are currently registered in PhD. or masters programs in recognized universities, and who are not more than 40 years old. The program particularly invites applications from women. The accepted applicants will be offered coaching and training through IITA to build their research knowledge and skills.

RUFORUM announces a call for applications for research scholarships to support the finalization of PhD research, data analysis, thesis write-up, publication, and dissemination of findings. Scholarships will be awarded on a competitive basis to Intra-ACP Academic Mobility students registered in one of the five African programmes listed in the announcement, and who are finalizing their studies. The deadline for applications is 30 September 2015.

Azerbaijan State Agricultural University has opened a call for papers for International Scientific Practical Conference on "Innovative development of agricultural science and education: world experience and current priorities".

The Africa Biosciences Challenge Fund (ABCF) seeks applicants with innovative ideas for research projects (up to 12 months) aligned with national, regional or continental agricultural development priorities. ABCF is fellowship program that develops capacity for agricultural biosciences research in Africa and supports research projects that ultimately contribute towards increasing food and nutritional security and / or food safety in Africa. Applicants must be scientists or graduate students affiliated with a NARI or African University, and conducting research in the areas of food and nutritional security or food safety in Africa. Closing date for applications: March 31st 2015.

The EGALE project will support partner HEIs in the development of an international consortium and new third level curricula (PhD) complying with international standards and capitalising on local expertise, including the spread of innovative and powerful teaching technologies such as distance learning. Relevant staff of the participating HEIs will be targeted to increase their qualifications.
