"The Week on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (WAIA) revolves around a regional fair to celebrate the innovativeness of smallholder farmers: the Eastern African Farmer Innovation Fair (EAFIF) to be held 28-29 May 2013 in Nairobi, Kenya. Four Prolinnova County Platforms in Ethiopia, Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda are leading initiatives in their respective countries to identify innovative farmers and to help them prepare for the fair. This competitive call is inviting farmers or their contact organisations to apply to take part in the EAFIF. The top 15 women and men innovators will be selected to go to Nairobi. Priority will be given to women innovators. "

CTA organised the CTA Top 20 cross-learning write-shop from 13-17 October 2014. The meeting brought together authors and case owners of the CTA Top 20 innovations, technical experts, editors and designers to produce: (i) Fact sheets, guidebooks and posters of the CTA Top 20 innovations for widespread dissemination in print and electronic formats; (ii) a publication/manuscript consisting of the CTA Top 20 innovations as case stories and; (iii) a technical report on the CTA Top 20 as input into a policy brief on scaling up innovations. It is expected that by increasing access to existing knowledge on the CTA Top 20 innovations, this will contribute to increasing productivity and earning potential of smallholder farmers. The write-shop was a success.

"The EU-funded project JOLISAA coordinated by CIRAD, France; the Prolinnova international network hosted by ETC Foundation, Netherlands; the CGIAR Research Program on Climate Change, Agriculture and Food Security (CCAFS); the AusAID-funded project Food System Innovation for Food Security (FSIFS) and other partners are to meet in May 2013to jointly discuss approaches to enhance knowledge-to-action linkages among actors in agricultural innovation systems in Africa. During WAIA, a workshop on Agricultural Innovation Systems in Africa (AISA) will take place, preceded by an Eastern Africa Farmer Innovation Fair to showcase the achievements of individual and groups of smallholder farmers in improving their farming and their livelihoods. "

"In 1798, economist Thomas Malthus predicted that the world would exceed its food supply by the late 20th century. While he was right to identify the challenges of feeding a growing population with a finite amount of land, in the last half a century agricultural production has tripled. So, how did this happen? The answer: innovations in farming technology. Smallholder farmers in particular have seen a rise in productivity over the last decade. So what are the innovations making the difference? We asked our community and crowdsourced the answers."

""Youth employment and hunger are two key issues that have been impacted by the economic crisis. This is particularly true for youth living in developing countries, representing 85% of the world youth. In an attempt to address these issues, the Global Youth Innovation Network, GYIN, has initiated its second Global Youth Summit called the 2016 Youth Agribusiness, Leadership, and Entrepreneurship Summit on Innovation (YALESI 2016). The summit will prioritise young people's needs, considering their developmental needs, and including underserved populations, such as girls, to an effective and inclusive employment strategy."

Le fond d'investissement OCP Innovation Fund for Agriculture (OIFA) lance un appel à projets pour les entrepreneurs du secteur agricole. Le Fond d'investissement OCP Innovation Fund for Agriculture souhaite contribuer au développement par l'innovation dans le secteur agricole. Pour se faire, le fond dispose de critères qui lui sont propres et qui visent à répondre à des exigences sociales, économiques et environnementales les plus importantes. L'objectif avoué: faire émerger des structures à fort potentiel avec des porteurs de projets sur le marché national mais aussi tournées vers l'international. Plusieurs critères sont attendus: l'innovation, l'approche globale et intégrée, la viabilité économique du projet et sa rentabilité, le développement local associé, et donc le potentiel à l'export.

"Ten years ago, the UNESCO International Meeting on Innovation and Excellence in TVET Teacher/Trainer Education held in Hangzhou, China, asked for developing TVET into an internationally acknowledged scientific community in order to professionalize TVET teacher/trainer education and to integrate TVET as sustainable, reproductive and innovative national scientific systems into national systems of innovation. The First World Congress on Teacher Education for Technical and Vocational Education and Training held in 2008 in Bandung, Indonesia reaffirmed this request by demanding that TVET teacher/trainer education should encompass "studies in the analysis, design and evaluation of: (a) vocational learning, educational and qualification processes, (b) occupational work and business processes, and (c) technology as an object of work and learning processes (d) as well as critical pedagogy for social change," and by asking for establishing respective "frameworks for promoting the continuing professional development of TVET practitioners." Le présent projet vise à encourager la sensibilisation aux nombreuses innovations technologiques et autres « fruits murs » développés par des organismes de recherche, des universités, des services de vulgarisation et des producteurs des pays ACP, ainsi que leur utilisation dans ces pays. Le projet a également pour objectif de donner plus de visibilité aux organisations de vulgarisation, de recherche et d'éducation en documentant et en publiant ces 'innovations à haut potentiel' qui ne requièrent aucune nouvelle pratique de gestion complexe, qui sont soutenues par d'autres experts et des producteurs, qui sont faciles à exploiter et à adapter.

"Somone (Mbour), 17 juin 2014 - Le projet "Innovation pour la formation et l'éducation en agriculture (INNOVATE)'' travaille à la mise en place de stratégies et outils pour l'intégration du genre dans l'enseignement agricole et nutritionnel, a affirmé mardi Larry Vaughan, directeur général d'USAID/ERA. ''INNOVATE collabore avec les secteurs public et privé de l'éducation et les organismes de formation dans les pays en voie de développement pour s'assurer que les professionnels agricoles reçoivent l'éducation et la formation qui répondent à la demande du marché'', a expliqué M. Vaughan."

En avril 2014, les ministres africains des sciences se sont réunis afin d'adopter la Stratégie décennale de l'UA pour la science, la technologie et l'innovation (STISA, 2014-2024) - en préparation du sommet ordinaire de l'UA qui se tiendra du 20 au 27 juin 2014 à Malabo, en Guinée équatoriale. Ce plan succède au Plan d'action consolidé (CPA) pour la science et la technologie, qui avait orienté la politique continentale au cours de la dernière décennie. La STISA remédie aux faiblesses du CPA, trop radicalement axé sur la R&D et les activités de financement, plutôt que d'avoir recours à la science pour régler les problèmes de l'Afrique. Élaborée après examen du CPA par un panel de haut niveau piloté par Calestous Juma, cette stratégie met davantage l'accent sur l'innovation et « la science au service du développement ». Elle est axée sur six domaines d'action prioritaires, comprenant « l'éradication de la faim et la sécurité alimentaire ». Aggrey Ambali, du pôle science, technologie et innovation de l'UA et du NEPAD (NSTIH), a présenté la STISA lors de la première conférence scientifique régionale de Bio-innovate (Éthiopie, février 2013).

Ceci est non seulement une possibilité, mais une nécessité absolue si notre continent veut relever le défi de la croissance inclusive. Mais cette révolution verte exigera un sens d'objectif commun et pourrait être déclenchée par des financements innovants » a déclaré Dr Ibrahim Assane Mayaki est directeur général du Nouveau Partenariat pour le développement de l'Afrique (NEPAD)."

Increasing agricultural productivity in developing countries and promoting youth employment and entrepreneurship are important recommendations of the new Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) adopted by the United Nations in 2015. Information and communication technologies (ICTs) play an important role. Young entrepreneurs using ICT innovations are particularly suited to contribute to increased agricultural productivity and sustainability given their inventiveness, energy and capacity to take risks.

"(20/05/2014) This year's European Maritime Day Conference held over the 19 & 20 May in Bremen, saw industry experts and policy makers from across Europe come together to discuss how innovation and research in the maritime economy can drive a European growth and jobs recovery whilst securing a sustainable future for Europe's seas. The main conclusions drawn by participants included: There is a vast potential for jobs and sustainable growth in the maritime economy. To exploit it we need to invest more in knowledge and innovation and focus on placing sustainability at the heart of Blue Growth. The issues related to seas and oceans can only be addressed at international level - more global governance is of paramount importance. The EU's Maritime Spatial Planning and Maritime Security Strategy are good examples of what can be achieved. Next year's European Maritime Day will be held by Piraeus, Greece, in May 2015."

Bank's e-institute for development has published a stand-alone on-line course to engage adult learners using a dynamic, online learning approach that connects users to the leading approaches to Agricultural Innovation System (AIS). The course contains eight modules including 'assessing, prioritizing, monitoring and evaluating AISA', 'agricultural research within an AIS' and 'rethinking agricultural education to support AIS'.
