The Research and Development Unit for English Studies (RDUES), based in the School of English at Birmingham City University, is a small team of corpus linguists, software engineers and statisticians. We carry out fundamental and applied research in corpus linguistics, developing new descriptions of the language in use and tools for the extraction and management of knowledge in databases. The Unit's linguistic background is broad: corpus-based linguistics, lexicography, applied linguistics, the study of modern English language, modern languages, TEFL. Activities include:

A self study tool for students that allows to listen and study each individual sentence within a videos: students can take and save notes about the vocabulary within the script and listen and record themselves saying sentences from the script then compare to the original.

The goal of TalkBank is to foster fundamental research in the study of human and animal communication. It will construct sample databases within each of the subfields studying communication. It will use these databases to advance the development of standards and tools for creating, sharing, searching, and commenting upon primary materials via networked computers.

This Web site is the online adaptation of Jean S Chittenden's 1964 doctoral thesis, 'Los nombres de personajes en las comedias de Tirso de Molina', which has become a useful tool for the study of Tirso's characters, the names used and the distribution across various categories such as 'noble', criado', or 'gracioso'. The site's List of Characters provides first and last name, title and category. Chittenden also wrote plot summaries for the 61 authentic works by Tirso, which are also available here, together with links to the full-text versions from the Comedia Web site

Students can select level, the area they want to study, the type of film and even the accent they want to learn. TubeQuizard will generate activities for them based around the subtitles. They can then listen, fill in gaps and check their answers. There is also a search engine so that you can type in a specific phrase and find a video that contains that text. You can also create your own video quizzes. You can either search for a video using the search tool on the site or copy paste in the URL of the video you want to use. The only limitation here is that the video must have subtitles available

The Sheffield Corpus of Chinese (SCC) is a diachronic corpus consisting of a wide range of fully marked-up Chinese historical texts together with an integral search and analysis tool. The texts are organised in different types and genres and in different time periods.
