The market opened on a weak note as a sudden shock from Cyprus rattled investors' nerves across globe. Banks in Cyprus have decided to impose a levy on depositors amid wide protests, which led to a fear of contagion across the financial system in Europe. Benchmark indices reacted to the news, following its Asian peers. The Sensex lost 159.36 points at 19268.20 while the Nifty fell 47.15 points or 0.80% at 5825.45. Biggest losers on the Sensex were Coal India (down 4.3 percent), Bharti Airtel (down 2.3 percent) and Hindalco (down 1.9 percent).... All sectoral indices ended lower, with BSE Realty index emerging as the top loser down 2.2% followed by the IT and Metal indices among others.Metal companies witnessed profit taking to end lower yesterday. Hindalco Industries, Tata Steel, Vedanta and Jindal Steel ended down 0.8-4.6% down. Banking shares ended mixed. Financials industrial and energy stocks lead losers today as news that Germany's economy is struggling caused investors to worry whether slowed economic expansion would affect demand.

The combination between the Fed announcement, meant to help the economy, and the Moody's downgrade pulled financial stocks, especially the major banks, lower for the day. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley were among the biggest losers with MS hitting a new 52-week low.

Precious metals seemed to lose their luster this week as investors attempted to sell off wins to account for the losers in their portfolio. With a seemingly declining value as a safe haven against the dollar the precious metal bull run of the last several months may be coming to an end.
