Alrighty boys, this post is simply for demonstrating how easy diigo is to get some helpful articles online which are considered as related or useful to the readers of your blog or website, but it's quite handy if you wanna gather the stuff for your personal research as well. After you read the following and decide to try it out, get the diigo toolbar first, do those things step by step, trust me, it won't take you more that 10 minutes to get familiar with it at all.

Create a tagging schema taxonomy: (n) the study of the general principles of scientific classification If you've had anything to do with organizing information, you've heard this term.  In the web world, site managers spend weeks developing classification systems for their content so their search features will work properly.  Now for a new version - folksonomy.  Folksonomy is the same thing as taxonomy only without the education.  Folksonomy describes the grassroots classification systems developing as more and more "tag" platforms appear online.  While some  tags are appearing as standards, it's still quite a free-for-all out there. 

I use Diigo to manage my bookmarks.  Anytime I find a page I want to save, I tell Diigo to bookmark it for me using the tags I assign that page.   Later - when I want a list of all the genealogy blogs I've bookmarked - I just click on my "genblog" tag on my Diigo page to view them. Because I have included surname tags on all the family photos I've uploaded to Flickr, I can send anyone requesting Barker information one link that displays all my Barker photo collection. The related articles section at the bottom of this post was created using Diigo to display all the links I've saved related to a specific topic (tag).

Because I use these systems daily, I've created my own tag system - a folksonomy - that I use across each of the different tagging applications/platforms I use.  For genealogy items I use the following tags: genealogy (for everything genealogy) genblog (any blog dealing with genealogy topics) genapp (genealogy software) gendex (a genealogy index - like Cindi's List) genpub (a genealogy publication) gendata (a genealogy data source) surnames for each family I'm researching location names - city, county and state - for areas I'm researching Every tagging site allows multiple tags.  I bookmark every article I write beginning with my site tag (familymatters for this blog) and then topic specific tags.  That [and Diigo's tools] is how I'm able to collect my earlier posts for a related articles list.  It's so flexible that I can create a list of only my articles or any articles I've bookmarked with a specific topic keyword. Tags are becoming an important component of your research toolbox so spend a few minutes developing a plan - a folksonomy - of keywords for your research.  Anyone who's interested in developing a standard for genealogy tags, please let me know in the comments.  My tags are very handy for my research, but "our" tags can help us all!

Diigo Okay, Diigo is really cool.  Especially in a job like mine where I do a lot of research.  Diigo is a social annotation site so if you like surfing the net and want to leave notes on your favourite websites, Diigo is the program to do it.  Registration is free and there is no download required for basic Diigo.  It allows you to leave virtual "sticky notes" on the websites you visit.  The really cool part?  You can share your "online" notes with people of your choosing.

Firefox extention for educators-Diigo

I’ve been using Diigo for a couple of weeks now and am loving it. That’s way it’s making my recommendation for a Firefox extension.

Permanently highlight and annotate text on any webpage with Diigo Have you ever bookmarked a web page, but upon returning had to re-read it to find what it was that you found interesting ? Have you ever wished you could add your notes and thoughts to web pages, the same way you would on paper ? Do you want to save, tag and share only the highlights of a web page ? Enter Diigo. Diigo lets you permanently highlight, annotate, tag and manage text from any website. When you view your bookmarks you can also view the sections you highlighted and the notes you wrote. It is much more useful than a mere “social bookmarking” service such as del.icio.us, Furl, or Digg. Diigo is my current “killer application”. Diigo version 2 is looking really good

Diigo > is a social bookmarking/research tool that is very similar to > del.icio.us > but in my opinion has the edge in terms of > features, usability and aesthetics > . They have just released version 2 of their look and feel and it is really nice. One of the best enhancements is in the Diigolet bookmarklet, one of the tools you can use to bookmark and forward sites to others. Unlike most bookmarklets which are fairly plain the Diigolet actually looks and functions almost as good as the dedicated Firefox extension whilst at the same time working on a range of different Internet browsers. One aspect that characterises the new web is the increasing capacity to annotate or edit socially written texts - through wikis or collaborative projects, such as those referenced in Mark Marina’s ‘Marginalia in the library of babel‘ project. Diigo software adds a further dimension to social bookmarking: If social bookmarking allows us to share our library catalogs, social annotation sites allow us to share our libraries complete with their underlinings, highlights, and marginalia.

Now I can use this new tool without really forgetting to bookmark the same links to my old bookmarking site as well. For my I do them at Del.icio.us and my bookmarks will be registered there while I am using Diigo. So if you want to give this service a try without loosing anything, this is the way to go. Configuration is simple as well!

Besides simply tagging and storing bookmarks online, Diigo seems to offer a couple of unique features focused on the idea of annotation and collaboration. Diigo's power comes from the Diigo toolbar. With the toolbar, a user can quickly access stored bookmarks tagged as "Links" (or other tags by simply changing the filter) via a traditional folder. From this toolbar, searches can be executed across all bookmarks, blog search engines, or any incredible number of sources of interests such as Movie/TV or Shopping. There is also a one-click access to your "Inbox" on the toolbar - essentially allowing real-time access to tags you are trying to track.

There are tons of social bookmarking sites out there and then there is Diigo. Unlike the other social bookmarking del.licio.us wannbie, I actually like Diigo.

If you are like me, someone who forgets why he bookmark a site the next day, you will find this feature handy. If I look back on my del.licio.us page, I can’t remember why I bookmarked half of the site on it. This I think is going to be really useful for collage student, when they are researching something on the web. They could put annotation on sites they found and share then with their other buddies in Diigo. Having Diigo lets you access another world of the web. You will see public highlights of sites by other Diigo users. There are 3 view modes, all (view all highlights and stickies), private (view only your highlights or stickies) and disable (no view of any highlights or stickies). Same like other social bookmarking services out there, you can subscribe / watch what other people are bookmarking. In Diigo, you can subscribe to a person or a tag and there is this mail looking icon on the Diigo toolbar in your Firefox that will show new bookmarked sites either by someone or some tag you subscribed to.

Social Annotation I have just read about a company currently in private beta called Diigo, which is in the business of social annotation (SA). Apparently SA is a superset of social bookmarking or tagging, which is of course the piece de resistance of ‘Web 2.0′. The question is can SA be an even better route to getting aquired by MAGY? Don’t quite me on ‘MAGY’ though since I am not sure what order those names should go in… I had been thinking about SA for some time but did not have the time / resources to get anything together for public showing - but this might be a good reason to do so. Of course given my record with getting code up on my blog I won’t have a sample till next year this time. Anyhow, the possiblities for SA are much more attractive than social bookmarking in my mind. With social annotations (at least what I consider it to be) I can surf to any web page and place tagged sticky notes (private or public) in a browser agnostic fashion that will contain my comments and refer to a certain block in the web page DOM. Then I can go to some central place to view / oranize my comments and can also subscribe to RSS of other people’s comments on those pages or from particular people.

The main problem that I have with Diigo (from the looks of their Flash demo) is that I need to install their toolbar - yuck!

The useful part of these systems for end users is that they can tag particular bits of content on a page and find exactly what they were referring to with a tag. Then if you combine this idea with microformats and the Semantic Web you might really be cooking with something combustible like methane.

Ever-since we got a sneak peak at Diigo, I've been playing around with it and marveling at the latest feature releases. Diigo is the product of hardwork, deep understanding of what end users want, and one of the most feature complete social annotation services I know of. Last week, the team at Diigo released some great updates that make it all the better reason to switch from whatever social bookmarking tool you're using, to Diigo. Here's a rough outline of what the team has been up to:Easier to Bookmark: Recent updates allows users to add a 'Diigolet' to their bookmarks; a button that allows you to add whatever page you are viewing to your Diigo bookmarks, an invaluable tool for information hungry users.Importing/Exporting: Badges are the 'hip' thing right now and Diigo doesn't want to miss out on it. So, they will be releasing a linkroll that will allow users to add their recent bookmarks to their blogs or websites to share what they have been bookmarking. You can also import your Del.icio.us bookmarks to your Diigo account.Toolbars: The Diigo toolbar has also been upgraded. You can blog about the page you are viewing with the "Blog-This" button, as well as instantaneously add the page you are viewing to your bookmarks.

Our design philosophy is simple -- what makes the most sense to us as users, what we'd like to have as users ourselves, and what are some creative ways to do things even better... We'd like to continue thinking out-of-the-box, and not to be totally bound by traditional framework or method of doing things.What Diigo has to do is really stick out to users; and that's pretty hard to do when there are a great number of other competing services. It even takes advantage of the del.icio.us API so that items that you tag or bookmark with Diigo, are also tagged to your del.icio.us account. Where it is quite different from del.icio.us, is that you can also more fully annotate your bookmarked pages, and bookmarks can also be saved locally. You can highlight and tag specific images and paragraphs from web pages, and also add sticky notes. These sticky notes can be public or private. For example if I tag and add a sticky note to a page, I can also see other sticky notes left by others or I can send a notification to a colleague so that she can read my annotation and respond. I can also use Diigo to save my selections and annotations and review them later. I can also forward them on via email. The Diigo toolbar puts all of these tools at your disposal.
