  I'm not sure what was wrong, but it affected only one browser and eventually prevented Diigolet from appearing.
  
  I cleared from Safari all cookies that contained the string
  diigo
  then logged in and all was fine.

  Again the workaround is to remove all diigo cookies then sign in.
