Do you have any Diigo identities other than kmanderson?
Do you always sign in in the same way?
Have you used OpenID to sign in?

no, but good question. > > Do you always sign in in the same way? yes; I stay signed in and have the log in page set to remember my username and password; I'm using my own mac > > Have you used OpenID to sign in? no > > You joined on 10 April 2009, not long after the announcement re: Furl. To my eye, there's an awful lot going on in a single dialogue (sometimes, too much; in a separate topic it's noted that the dialogue becomes too tall for netbooks and the like). Many things that the local computer must draw from Diigo servers (possibly a variety of databases behind the scenes) to populate the three menus, the varieties of tags etc..
With that in mind, I'm not certain that a spinner, whilst suggestions are being found, is a sign that suggestions are the only class of data that's not fully loaded.
I really appreciate what I can do with Diigo, but I'm feeling lost because all the bookmarking I've done since August 3 has vanished.
Nothing seemed different when I was making them, highlighting, etc..
Are they gone for good or were somehow never logged/made to begin with?
For what it's worth, in the past month I've updated Firefox when Firefox has prompted me to do so.
Thanks for any light you can shed on this.

3. Environment
What's your operating system and version?
What's your current version of Firefox?
Are you using Diigolet, or an installed version of Diigo?
If it's installed, what's the version number of the add-on?
Do you use any other add-ons?
4. Advice from Mozilla
Troubleshooting extensions and themes.
If you follow this route, you might begin by disabling all extensions other than Diigo.
5. Identities
Do you have any Diigo identities other than kmanderson?
Do you always sign in in the same way?
Have you used OpenID to sign in?

Yes, it's working today: after I discovered the earlier bookmarks were gone I did some -- a few at a time -- today to see if it was working.
Your previous note gives me several things to check; I'll do so and let you know.
Thanks for the ideas above.

https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2792 currently offers outdated version 3.1.6.13, which was released in December 2008 so it's a fair guess that at the time(s) of the apparent loss of bookmarks, you used 3.1.6.13.

I use Diigolet more often than the installed version of Diigo, but in my experience:

Spinners and other devices that signify activity/loads may have multiple meanings within a single dialogue.
Glance for a moment at screen shot 004 (ignore the other shots) at http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/43910#14
