This article is interesting because we are used to major companies outsourcing their positions across the world, but here a service paid for by Canadian taxes is being outsourced elsewhere, taking jobs away from Canadian taxpayers. This introduces an interesting ethical issue, as many believe it is wrong for a company paid for exclusively by Calgarians is outsourcing jobs to other areas of the world.

In the Shift, Gratton mentions globalization and the increased shift of jobs overseas. This link (it's actually an audio podcast) speaks to what Gratton states is the increase of jobs to Asia and India and information on this practice. It is interesting that they note that outsourcing does not have to simply be done overseas - a firm can outsource anything if it gives it to another firm - and it also speaks to how offshoring jobs isn't always the best option and can even end up costing the business more money. It also provides an outline of the benefits of sending jobs overseas, but also the benefits of keeping certain parts of the business in country and why large businesses may actually refute what Gratton is proposing .

This page lists links and information on different "green" jobs/careers. The centre is located in Kitchener but the green jobs are Canada-wide with some international ones.

While this is a brochure put together by the Manitoba government, I believe it is still relevant to this week's discussions. It is a simple breakdown of how the workforce is changing, why jobs in sustainability are important, and what jobs, from all skill levels, can contribute to a growing and sustainable economy. I like that it breaks down the different types of sectors: green energy, manufacturing, green building and transportation, agriculture and natural resource management, green hospitality, community engagement, and economic development... You begin to see that there are sustainable jobs out there for anyone of any skill level.

A global Randstad study found that a third of Canadians feel their jobs are threatened by advances in technology, and one in four believes the job they currently hold could vanish entirely if the trend continues. Advancements in technology have always threatened certain industries, and now is no different.

The website Globalization101 is a vast resource covering many topics regarding the globalization phenomenon. The article High-Stakes Testing in particular looks at different educational systems, and how US admissions are undergoing reform, while being compared to other educational system styles. The major link between this article and the first chapter of the World is Flat is the focus on skills, not job titles or location. The new standardized admissions tests will focus on skill development opposed to grades which may level the playing field for people to find internationally connected jobs. 

This is an interesting article which introduces the reader to some of the pros and cons involved in job sharing.

Ontario has a strong economy and many opportunities to offer newcomers. But finding a job takes hard work. It can also take time. It's a good idea to prepare for your job search before you leave for Ontario.

I saw that the Labour Market Information Service had already been previously commented on. So I decided to share this link on immigration in Ontario instead. It talks about finding work for new immigrants. This could be temporary or full time work.

This site is in Alberta however is great because you can easily see the type of occupation, the NOC code (for qualification purposes), average wage and average salary. An important pat of labour market information is being able to see what wage/income you will be receiving. This could make or break whether you accept a job or not.

This website provides quarterly updates on Ontario's Labour Market Information. It covers topics including: job gain/loss percentages, unemployment rates. It also breaks job information down by Industry covering employments rates, good produced, and various related services. This resource is beneficial as it covers regional trends within Ontario and provides you with graphs and charts so that the data is presented in an easier to understand manner. It also provides the sources of the data and the links to the source documents if available allowing for more in-depth research to be done on a particular number presented.

The stereotypical notion of an Indian call centre is fast being outpaced by a growing move to the Philippines. This article states that the shifting jobs from India represents almost 30 Billion dollars in loses. It's interesting to read that when one may think that the jobs shift form North America to Asia, but in reality they also shift from different countries in Asia

This website was found as a link from the LEDC_London Economic Develoment Council. Particularly interesting as it demonstrates specific job classes, educational requirements and whether they are on the increase in the local region or not. Even has a section specific to Career Counselors! We offer access to local labour market, jobs, and training/education information for Elgin, Middlesex and Oxford counties.

This article reflects the general trend of Westernized countries who at first implement programs and budgets to help protect and conserve their natural resources and species, but after realizing the costs of maintaining such a program, they cut funding and eventually abandon the initial idea altogether. This typically occurs when a government is attempting to privatize areas of the public sector, and has happened to several services and industries within Ontario. This article also highlights the effects of cancelling protective programs for the natural landscape and its resources, as many people who rely on certain natural resource industries are at risk of losing their jobs, as well as those involved with the protection and enforcement of such programs. This specific case deals with the endangered species of Caribou living on a conservation area in Northern Ontario, and their fate lies at the hands of the final outcome of this decision to cancel or continue the level of protection currently over that area. The primary threat is the natural resource industry and their extraction practices, which is potentially fatal for the Caribou species, as the government is more easily persuaded with the promise of financial return over protecting an area that is a natural resource goldmine and its few animal species that inhabit it. There are job cuts and office closures in Ontario's natural resource future, however the extent to which it effects depends on how environmentally aware the government decides to be.

This short article is interesting in that it argues that despite being a job that can't be outsourced, the construction industry gets neglected and has a reputation for being a dirty job. It also points out the positives and possibilities within. It made me think how this industry could be a smart one to get into and will probably go through some changes in the coming years as it evolves due to the fact of more/different people getting into it because for the most part, it can't be outsourced (eg. hopefully women and not the typical "macho" type).

Ontario Job Futures is a publication which provides information on the current trends and future outlook for about 200 occupations common to Ontario. It is developed by the Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities, and uses projections developed in collaboration with Employment and Social Development Canada. It is a good source for looking at local employment trends for the short and medium-term future in people's careers.
