    Disc images are a fairly common packaging standard for large software programs. If you want to try out a new Linux distribution, for example, chances are you'll need to download a disc image in ISO format and burn it to a blank CD-ROM or DVD.

    I am bugged by an issue, not reproducible by Apple, in which iCal search results are always empty (never a thing found). I'm bookmarking this hint and comments for consideration when I review the bug report.

  • you can select from the International Preferences pane to allow the input source to be system-wide or document specific. I've got my set to 'document specific'. This lets me enter Arabic in one document, Greek in another,
  • after a couple of switches input source becomes the same for all windows/applications.

    This started happening to me too (in my case, switching from US to British on its own will) but only after I started using the NoScript and Diigo Toolbar plugins for Firefox. I don't use Adium. The switch to British makes it a real pane to type microblogging hashtags, as the UK MacBook keyboard has no hash.

  • Unfortunately if I have the headphones connected it's their volume that is muted before shutdown and reset later. Is there a way to specify the speakers?

    This looks like great (it is a mix of Bash and AppleScript) and it works very well for me. However if you are not familiar with simple Unix administration, you might prefer packaged freeware or shareware like StartupSound.prefPane or Psst.

    Command allows you get the UUID of the machines on your network. Handy when manually adding machines to your workgroup manager. Especially when adding 10.7 machines to your WGM.

    Mac OS X 10.5 requires you to enter an administrator's password to pause/resume a print queue, where no previous version of OS X has done so. This is extremely annoying in a lab setting -- if there's a paper jam or something, the queues on all the computers need to be restarted by an administrator, instead of the user just clicking Resume. I haven't seen a solution to this elsewhere, so here's what I came up with:

    A hidden user is a user that can login to the system, but the account will not be displayed in the Login Window, where all of the other accounts on the machine are listed. In lab or work environments, it's often desired to have a hidden user that has Admin rights for administrative functions and/or other special circumstances.
