Never far from the news, the iconic iPhone slinks back beneath the media spotlight this week thanks to emerging Net speculation that suggests an improved version of Apple's latest 3G smartphone will be offered up with a 32GB capacity this coming January.

Sure, the iPhone and the Apple TV provide access to YouTube videos, but this access is not the same as downloading a YouTube video to your hard drive. For that, you can use TubeTV 1.0, a straightforward, basic YouTube video downloader. Just enter the URL of the YouTube video into TubeTV (or use the Search field) and click on the "Download movie" button, and TubeTV saves the video to your Mac.

I have a joke for you: how are iPhone applications and rap artists Salt-n-Pepa different? Answer: Salt-n-Pepa may be able to "Push It," but iPhone applications can't, thanks to Apple's decision to leave push notifications out of the iPhone 2.1 release. OS X has a number of options for handling disk images-settings for such things as automatically opening them, moving Internet-enabled images to the trash after opening, verifying checksums, and more. You control all of these options (and a few more) in Disk Utility's preferences panel. If you change these settings often, though, you may tire of launching Disk Utility and opening its preferences panel. As an alternative-and with a side bonus of gaining one additional option-you can install a hidden System Preferences panel to make accessing these options a bit easier. There are two ways to install this panel; one requires Terminal, and the other uses just the Finder. If Apple were to update the panel at some point, the Finder method wouldn't reflect those updates, while the Terminal method always insures you're seeing the latest version of the panel.

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, will deliver the opening keynote for this year's Macworld Conference & Expo, and it will be Apple's last keynote at the show. The keynote address will be held at Moscone West on Tuesday, January 6, 2009 at 9:00 a.m. Macworld will be held at San Francisco's Moscone Center January 5-9, 2009.

For almost any system administrator, the idea of "off-time" is fictional. Even when I'm on vacation, there's an unwritten expectation that if need be, I'm going to be summoned to solve a problem. (Even on my honeymoon, for example, I found myself spending a half-hour or so dealing with a work issue.)
