What Students Taught Me About Cyberbullying | bNetS@vvy - 3 views

  •
"n 2006, I had the opportunity to conduct focus group interviews with students on the topic of cyberbullying. I partnered with Dr. Robin Kowalski and Dr. Susan Limber, psychologists at Clemson University who had already conducted a national survey on cyberbullying with students in grades 6 through 8. To build on that knowledge, we interviewed 148 middle and high school students in public schools. We selected schools in part for their diverse socioeconomic status.tudents in public schools.

Principal to parents: Take kids off Facebook [Video] - 4 views

  •
Anthony Orsini sent an e-mail blast to the Benjamin Franklin Middle School community in Ridgewood, New Jersey, on Wednesday, urging parents to take down their children's online profiles on Facebook and elsewhere. "There is absolutely no reason for any middle school student to be a part of a social networking site!," he wrote. "Let me repeat that - there is absolutely, positively no reason for any middle school student to be a part of a social networking site!" The main problem, he wrote, is that tweens do not have the resilience to withstand internet name-calling. "They are simply not psychologically ready for the damage that one mean person online can cause," he said.

Cyberbullying Goes to College - 0 views

  • Welcome to Cyberbullying 2.0, the adult version of the meanest pastime on MySpace and Facebook. In recent years, the dangerous game has grown up and grown calculated.
  • ts consequences now include adult-sized miseries — dashed career opportunities, ruined professional relationships, crippling anxiety, even thoughts of suicide.
  • Rate My Professors, the online host of Bierman’s nemesis, now boasts more than eight million student-generated ratings of more than a million professors at 6,000 schools.

  • uedj encourages faculty members who believe they have been victimized to act quickly and tell their department chairs that false rumors are being spread. Staff members should immediately inform a supervisor and seek help through the FSAO, which can help arrange legal and psychological support. “The research literature shows that bullying behaviors are not effectively stopped by intervening in a haphazard, case-by-case basis,” Guedj says. “Isolated supervisors and department heads who have little to no experience in such matters are usually in way over their heads.”

In summer 2007, a music professor at BU was shocked to learn that he had a Facebook page - in his name, with a recent photo and a spot-on bio. But, the professor recalls, "embedded in the document were really scurrilous things that were reputed to have been said by me, and they were quite unpleasant and ugly and immature."

Facebook, Take 2: Cyberbullying - 0 views

  • I also asked them why they allowed certain girls to be on their friends list when they know that some of them will resort to this type of bullying, and most said because they felt they “had to.” This kind of pressure to allow “friends” on one’s site could also be considered a form of bullying, as they feel there may be consequences to shutting some out regardless of their lack of Internet etiquette.
  • As a public school principal, I can’t legally discipline a student for cyberbullying actions that take place outside of school that don’t result in bodily harm at school. However, when cyberbullying that has taken place outside of school becomes a school issue, as it did today, we must reserve the right to take action if the effects of outside cyberbullying threaten the safety or well-being of the student(s) in school, even if it hasn’t caused bodily harm…yet.
  • School officials have the authority to impose discipline if the speech has, or there are particularized reasons to believe it will cause a substantial disruption at school or interference with the rights of students to be secure. Three types of situations generally meet this standard - violent altercations, hostile environment for a student, significant interference with instruction.
  •
Our Acceptable Use of the Internet policy next school year will definitely not only address cyberbullying, it will include a clause that states something to the effect, "If cyberbullying outside of school becomes an issue in which a student feels threatened or unsafe in any way at school, the principal has the authority to discipline the cyber bully." It will give the school community the clear message that cyberbullying will not be tolerated and at the very least will give me a little leverage when I need it.

What Does Internet Blocking Suggest to Students? - 0 views

  •
This morning, a student sent me a link to an article describing the Internet crackdown occurring as official China has 'prepared' for the 20th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre. "Looks like schools aren't the only place Facebook is blocked," read the text across my inbox.

If you are anything like me who has one of those jobs that require travel, you're in this business - first and foremost - to make money and secure your financial future; everything after that comes in second. Traveling around the country is great, helping others in times of need is fantastic, even being able to attend this conference and write it off as a taxable expense is a beneficial experience. All of these wonderful perks are nothing more than that: perks.

Smart Backpack Travel Laptop - 0 views

  •
I bought Smart Backpack Travel Laptop for airline travel. When I packed it the first time, I was amazed by how much it held and how organized everything was. I was going to write a review then but my husband said to wait till after the trip, that it might fall apart during travel. Well, the trip is over and this backpack is easily the best AND the most comfortable I've ever had. Zippers worked fine, the computer section was padded, the big compartment easily held my CPAP, the wide padded straps and padded back felt terrific, and the handle on top was easy to hold and felt very sturdy. Would happily buy this again for anyone needing a good backpack. I LOVED having my carry-on on my back instead of hanging off a shoulder or dragging behind me.

Young teens underestimate bullying, wonder 'Is it just me?' - 2 views

  •
The online study of 1,454 adolescents ages 12-17, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, tried to gauge the differences between school bullying and cyberbullying and found that young people underestimate the bullying of their peers, particularly when it takes place online.
