In response to the recent rash of teen suicides related to cyberbullying, Perez Hilton appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show this week to say that he will be ending his crusade to bully people online. Hilton made a name for himself as a celebrity blogger, making nasty comments about celebrities and attempting to "out" gay and lesbian stars. Harvard researchers studying the ethical sensibilities of youth have found that most young people are devoid of ethical thinking or consideration for others when using the web.

October is National Cyber Security Awareness Month, and the National Cyber Security Alliance is looking to raise awareness among college students to help them stay safe and secure online. According to the 2010 Identity Fraud Survey Report, college students lost five times more money than any other age group as a result of identity fraud or other online fraud situations.

In WEBONAUTS INTERNET ACADEMY, kids (age 8-10) explore what it means to be a citizen in a web-infused‚ information-rich world. Participants play through a series of 12 missions adhering to the Webonauts' motto: "Observe, Respect, Contribute." Each mission helps children understand critical online safety issues, such as the importance of protecting passwords and maintaining privacy settings. Other missions teach how to differentiate between credible and non-credible sources of information and how to react to bullying. The online study of 1,454 adolescents ages 12-17, conducted by researchers at the University of California, Los Angeles, tried to gauge the differences between school bullying and cyberbullying and found that young people underestimate the bullying of their peers, particularly when it takes place online.

Digital Information Fluency (DIF) is the ability to find, evaluate and use digital information effectively, efficiently and ethically. DIF involves knowing how digital information is different from print information; having the skills to use specialized tools for finding digital information; and developing the dispositions needed in the digital information environment. As teachers and librarians develop these skills and teach them to students, students will become better equipped to achieve their information needs.

Microsoft and ISTE have joined forces to put together a series of web literacy lessons, activities, and support resources to help students develop their critical thinking skills when searching the web. The new student-centered curriculum will provide guidance and activities for your students on how to search effectively, how to analyze "the anatomy of a search result," and moreover, understand how to judge the validity and source of the content they find on the web. This curriculum was developed collaboratively by ISTE and Microsoft and will be available soon free to educators.
