MTV's campaign to educate teens about the dangers of SEXTING. Sending or forwarding nude, sexually suggestive, or explicit pics on your cell or online. For some people, it's no big deal. But real problems can emerge when the parties involved are under 18, when people get pressured into sexting, and when sexts go viral.

As part of its multi-year publicity campaign to address the emerging issue of teen digital abuse, MTV partnered with the AP on a study that provides an in-depth look at the prevalence of digital abuse among young people today.

A survey of 1200 teens and young adults (conducted by Knowledge Networks for the Associated Press and MTV) found that 22% of the digital youth reported they have been targeted for digital abuse, either through cell phone, email or internet monitoring by someone they were dating.

On January 15, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit heard arguments in Miller, et al. v. Skumanick, a child pornography case that, oddly, involves no child pornography. The case goes back to 2006, when two girls aged 12 were photographed by another friend on her digital camera. The two girls were depicted from the waist up, wearing bras. In a separate situation, our third client was photographed as she emerged from the shower, with a towel wrapped around her waist and the upper body exposed. Neither of the photos depicted genitalia or any sexual activity or context. In 2008 the girls' school district learned that these and other photos were circulating, confiscated several students' cell phones, and turned the photos in question over to the Wyoming County district attorney, George Skumanick, Jr.

This lesson can be implemented at school if you are teaching in an environment that allows students to use personal learning devices, or outside of school if students are banned from using digital devices.

There are no policies at any of the three districts that directly addresses popular social networking Web sites, because, administrations are finding, they can't keep up with technology.
