Copyright primer for school admnistrators, developed by Hall Davidson. This resource is designed to inform school leaders of what they may do under the law. Very helpful document. We use this at all of our CTAP school administrator trainings.

This site provides reading materials for students studying the law as it applies to activities in cyberspace. The reading materials include edited cases, statutes, treaties, and law review articles, as well as content written by the individual module authors. Some have likened the study of cyberspace law to trying to board a moving bus. Given the pace of change in this field any attempt at a traditional casebook would largely be outdated before it reached the hands of the students. This site is designed to take advantage of the hypertext media offered by the world wide web by providing reading modules that can be altered or replaced as the law changes.

Citation Machine is an interactive web tool designed by David Warlick to assist high school, college, and university students, their teachers, and independent researchers in their effort to respect other people's intellectual properties. The updated version 3.0 [Dec 2007] allows for multiple authors and remembers your citations for later bibliographies.

Kids create their own avatars and complete missions that educate them about cyberbullying, social media and mobile safety. Part of an Australian non-profit social initiative (Smart Online/SafeOnline) that uses kids to deliver campaigns aimed at educating their peers about cyberbullying/cybersafety issues. Registration is required and even though this is designed for use in Australia, anyone can play. A nice feature is that, as kids complete missions, they get an email summarizing what they have learned. This is the same agency that created the video, Pants Down

In this game, designed for ages 8-10, the CyberPigs play on their favourite Web site and encounter marketing ploys, spam and a close encounter with a not-too-friendly wolf. The purpose of the game is to teach kids how to spot online marketing strategies, protect their personal information and avoid online predators.

Who owns what you compose? Who controls what happens with the words, images, music, sounds, videos that you create? What rights do you have to use other people's compositions? This unit plan focuses on helping students find answers to these questions. Students explore a range of resources on fair use and copyright then design their own audio public service announcements (PSAs), to be broadcast over the school's public address system

The measure of your reputation is what you do plus what others say about you. That was one of the first things I learned in PR. A reputation can be managed, and can be influenced by the things we do, but it can never be designed or decided upon by its holder. Reputation is earned.

Nolensville Elementary School Principal Beth Ferguson recently let parents know that many of their children are on social networking sites designed for teens and adults. While this is not a violation of any school policy, Ferguson was concerned enough to send letters and Internet tips to parents. Ferguson found at least 13 students from her K-5 school on Facebook, the popular networking site, and she knows there are probably more.

Revealing Images Sent Via Cellphones Prompt District Attorney to Offer Seminars but Threaten Felony Charges. Images had been discovered on cellphones confiscated at the local high school. The prosecutor gave teens an ultimatum: accept charges of child pornography or enroll in an education course designed to spell out the dangers of sexting.

This curriculum, from the Electronic Frontier Foundation, is designed to give teachers a comprehensive set of tools to educate students about copyright while incorporating activities that exercise a variety of learning skills. Lesson topics include: the history of copyright law; the relationship between copyright and innovation; fair use and its relationship to remix culture; peer-to-peer file sharing; and the interests of the stakeholders that ultimately affect how copyright is interpreted by copyright owners, consumers, courts, lawmakers, and technology innovators.

EFF (Electronic Frontier Foundation) created Teaching Copyright as a balanced curriculum encouraging students to make full and fair use of technology that is revolutionizing learning and the exchange of information. The Teaching Copyright curriculum was developed with the input of educators from across the U.S. and has been designed to satisfy components of standards from the International Society for Technology in Education and the California State Board of Education.

Fair use is a doctrine within copyright law that allows use of copyrighted material for educational purposes without permission from the the owners or creators. It is designed to balance rights of users with the rights of owners by encouraging widespread and flexible use of cultural products for the purposes of education and the advancement of knowledge.

The FBI-SOS Internet Challenge is an internet safety program designed to help students recognize potential dangers associated with the internet, email, chat rooms and social networking sites. The program addresses and defines topics serious in nature such as seduction, child pornography, solicitation, exploitation, obscenity and online predators. Students take web-based quizzes and review specific web sites aimed at promoting online safety.
