This is a promising site, so I thought I'd share.

Thought provoking blog on whether pastoral leadership is truly functional. Makes a few claims that are reactionary/exaggerated, but something to noodle on, despite!

Some best practices of professional leaders of companies with happy employees: -Focus on the mission. Teach For America urges all staffers to spend time in classrooms to see how they make a difference. -Communicate openly. At Dreamworks, Katzenberg blogs frequently for the entire staff. -At Zappo, senior employees receive no benefits that aren't also given to junior hires.

Although this is just a snippet, it is a nice resource to file away with our Northouse readings. Personally, #3 rang true to me as I don't think it's possible to be a strong leader without awareness to your teams' responses, reactions and own motivators.

"The wisdom of the Bees" by Michael O'Malley, Penguin Group 2010 "What the hive can teach buisness about leadership effeciency and growth" is where the author takes the reader through a 25 step process utilizing the skills of bees and bee colonies to inform and guide organizations in identifying their strengths and weaknesses to create purposeful, effective and successful group norms and outcomes. It's fascinating and my choice for a review along with my second one

Hi folks....somehow this did not make it into the group blog on books to read but instead sat in my own Diigo library. It is worth taking a gander at and I am loving reading it. Galen

I loved the wisdom of bees too! This is a very good book and is inviting to a wide variety of folks. I liked that when I used it for a leadership class that I had positive feedback from both young and old, male and female and it has great insights regardless of where you are in life or business.

I hope you all know about the Alban Institute. I found this post interesting.

In his continuing blog for the Huffington Post, Bill Gates talks about his ongoing commitment to changing the world. I wonder what his motivations are. Is he a true humanitarian, or is this some scheme to move the global economies in a direction that brings more profitability for the Gates family? Is this altruistic and authentic leadership, or corruption on a level we have never seen before?

This article is about members of Congress going on a fast to protest hunger. These people, regardless of the reason, were willing to take a stand for what they believe is right, good, and just. This article goes along with some of the concepts discussed this week and can serve as an example of leaders working to better the lives of others.

I thought this was an interesting article to read, especially in light of the continuing disaster in Japan.

I came across this article and it reviews a film that is coming out about, "the power of people to change their world."

In light of what we've been discussing in class, I thought this article was interesting.

How could I not share this? CRG, from Alban, is a marvelous resource for ministers and those who care about the flourishing of congregations. And while this post is brief, it makes some interesting distinctions that differ just a bit from what we've already discussed.

What if leaders were judged based on "evidence of demand," the term coined by author Tammy Erickson? What if the organizations we serve developed internal collaboration hubs specifically designed to capture peer feedback and serve as a reputation-development tool. Would we be proud of our reputations? Would our website demonstrate evidence of demand: upcoming team commitments based on others' desire to work for us and with us?

So my question is this...Can you take care of the employees and not create a "country club" environment but create delighted customers? I think they have the idea flipped. I think you can definitely take care of the customers and never provide an environment for your employees. This is where leadership sets itself apart from management.
