This site provides a fun and interactive way for students to look at statistical information from the US government. It would help students with map skills and being able to read mathematical information (mean, median etc.) from a graph. There are links included for teachers and parents along with a link to "grown up stats" that links you to fedstats.gov.

Historic American Newspapers - 1 views

  •
This is from the Library of Congress's main page. It is a collection of historical newspapers from 1836-1922. It would be a great source of information on what else was going on during main events, such as the civil war. It would also be a great way to show people reacted to events during that time period.

This has online forms for analyzing primary sources. The forms can be completed online and then printed or printed out as a guide for students. They include links to written documents, artifact, cartoon, map. motion picture, photograph, poster, and sound recordings. These would be immensely helpful in teaching students how to think critically about documents from the past or the present.

Guidelines for Teaching about the Holocaust - 0 views

  •
This is a tool provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to help teachers organize their instruction of the Holocaust. It speaks to the rationale for the teaching and provides guidelines for teaching about genocide, a very sensitive topic. There are also links for both teachers and students which give a comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust. The images and first person accounts are riveting.

Repositories of Primary Sources - 0 views

  •
This site has over 5000 websites with archives all over the world. I can see that this would be useful for social studies classes to locate primary sources from other countries. Even though many of the sources are in the foreign language, many of the images could be used to support and springboard the content. There is a translator embedded into the site.

British serials were the precursor to the modern magazine.  This website archives several serials from the nineteenth century.  The serials brought reading material to the working and middle class in a regular and affordable manner. These periodicals reflect the time and culture of nineteenth century British society.

Ben's Guide: Grades 3-5 - 0 views

  •
This is a great, easy to navigate site.  It includes many aspects that would enhance our 3rd grade curriculum, such as communities, branches of the government, and how laws are made.  It puts these in an easy to read format, and if you have struggling readers or vise versa, they can read the corresponding section from a different grade level.

PBS: Public Broadcasting Service - 1 views

  •
This website provides current as well as historical video and audio artifacts. It also provides photos and illustrations of historical events and people. For example, under Prohibition, students can view the newspaper headlilne making alcohol illegal, as well as photos of events and influential people in that era. Many other historical topics are covered. This would be a useful tool in History or maybe even a Literature class.

The primary sources at this site are usually viewed in video form in clips from the various PBS documentary programs. Suggest you search like so, "primary sources" + "grade 3", inserting what ever grade you need. PBS Teachers can be accessed from this site, too, to search for good lesson plans for grades 1-12 related to primary sources. The search here can be narrowed down by grade level. This site is good for teaching about people, places, events, animals, inventions, and cultures.

Food groups - 1 views

  •
This page has wonderful resources for teachers but also a few things that children might like as well after they have learned about healthy eating and the food guide pyramid. For example, there are many resources available for teachers to print when teaching about the food guide pyramid. There is also a "blast off" game that children can play. In the game children must supply their astronaut with the right balance of foods in order to make it to the planet they are trying to reach.

Library of Congress - 1 views

  •
The Library of Congress website offers modules for teachers that can be used to gain information on how to use primary source documents with their students. Parts of these modules especially "Analyzing Primary Sources: Photographs and Prints" and "Analyzing Primary Sources: Maps" can be used for instruction with students. There is an interactive slideshow that shows students how to go through the process of analyzing primary sources such as prints, maps, and photos. This could be used by a teacher librarian or any teacher who is asking students to use primary sources in the form of prints, photos, and maps in class.

This website is a great resource for students looking for information about the Holocaust. Besides their own archive of Holocaust material, they have links to several other sites which also have primary archival material. American Journeys: Eyewitness Accounts of Early American Exploration and Settlement - 0 views

  •
5th graders learn about explorers in social studies and we do a research unit in media.  This site is very cool because it has actual documents that contain personal accounts by American explorers, Indians, missionaries, traders and settlers.  I love reading the actual words from these famous pioneers from long ago.  I think it gives kids something "real" to relate to when studying history.

shmoop claims to "speak student."  I think this is a great site for kids who are trying to understand their topic of choice.  There are some primary source links embedded within the text of each subject.  The high interest topics of study makes this site usable for students doing research.

Civil War Primary Sources - 1 views

  •
When students are asked to research the Civil War, this website provides a variety of documents that are interesting and helpful to students.  I enjoyed looking at documents that were personal stories from the war.  I think students will also like reading about the Civil War from multiple perspectives.

  •
Describes the education and training needed for hundreds of different jobs. Tells how much expected earnings for careers are, explains what workers in these jobs can expect to do on the job and what sort of working conditions under which they will work.
  •
Being able to access the online version of this handbook would be invaluable for school libraries as it would save money and space in the library. Additionally, as this is updated annually, the online version would provide much more up to date information.

EducationQuest - 0 views

  •
EducationQuest is an excellent resource for Nebraska students transitioning from high school to college. It can help those looking at community colleges as well as universities seek sources for school funding.
  •
I would use this with students who are looking at careers which require more than a high school education, to help them find ways to pay their way towards their chosen career.

FBI - The Vault - 1 views

  •
There several ways to search the FBI-by category, keyword, site map, and A-Z index. Most of the primary resources are documents from the FBI's files on a variety of people, from Lady Bird Johnson to Michael Jackson. Occasionally, there are things other than documents, like video of 9/11 attack. This site is mainly for grades 6-12 for American history.
