    This official White House site is geared for secondary and older. The students can learn about the branches of government both Federal and State governments. They can find contacts for the representatives in both Houses as well as the Cabinet. Blogs and podcasts of the Presidential addresses are posted here as well as current information about bills being debated. There is also historical information about the White House, Presidents, and First Ladies.

    This site provides current news related to the Earth and is processes. Of particular interest to science and social science teachers are the articles on climate change , nature and wildlife, emerging diseases, and the tracking of earthquakes, volcanoes and hurricanes.

Exploring Earth Visualizations - 0 views

    This is a God-send for science and social studies classes. The visualizations and animations are very clear and easily navigable for both students and teachers. This movement supports comprehension of complex topics. Among other things, they illustrate Earth's movement from space, multiple representatives of a single place and models of molecules.

Guidelines for Teaching about the Holocaust - 0 views

    This is a tool provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to help teachers organize their instruction of the Holocaust. It speaks to the rationale for the teaching and provides guidelines for teaching about genocide, a very sensitive topic. There are also links for both teachers and students which give a comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust. The images and first person accounts are riveting.

  • This site includes historical materials that may contain negative stereotypes or language reflecting the culture or language of a particular period or place. These items are presented as part of the historical record.
  • Rather than include just a few ads on many topics, we elected to digitize and make available hundreds or thousands of ads that relate to one of five main categories. This enables researchers and students to have enough material to draw on to begin to understand that advertising for a certain product or time period. The categories we selected are: Beauty and Hygiene, Transportation, Radio, Television, and World War II.

    This site could be an invaluable resource for teaching media literacy. Analysis of multiple advertisements for specific products over time will shed some light on not only advertising techniques but provide an insight into the social culture of the time. History should be taught in the context of  the culture of the time. Advertisements provide visuals as well as text to create an  image of that culture. I especially appreciate that negative stereotypes are included. These can be used, carefully, to spark a discussion where students can be taught critical thinking skills These could even be used in literacy classes to create a discussion and to introduce a book.

    This site has over 5000 websites with archives all over the world. I can see that this would be useful for social studies classes to locate primary sources from other countries. Even though many of the sources are in the foreign language, many of the images could be used to support and springboard the content. There is a translator embedded into the site.

    These primary documents are listed by date, which would make it a handy reference for teachers and students, especially in social studies classrooms. The documents can be downloaded in a printer friendly view with the citation on the bottom. There is a wide variety of topics of interest to students.

    This has online forms for analyzing primary sources. The forms can be completed online and then printed or printed out as a guide for students. They include links to written documents, artifact, cartoon, map. motion picture, photograph, poster, and sound recordings. These would be immensely helpful in teaching students how to think critically about documents from the past or the present.

    This is a 2 page document which offers suggestions for teachers about using the online resources from the National Archives. It is a quick read with the web links right in the text for ease of use. The suggestions go beyond the obvious use for research to include links to lesson plans and resources to teach document analysis. This could be a very useful tool for teachers in all subjects.

      Justification for using primary source documents with students. It can be used with historical fiction as well as general research in other subjects.
  • Primary sources fascinate students because they are real and they are personal; history is humanized through them. Using original sources, students touch the lives of the people about whom history is written. They participate in human emotions and in the values and attitudes of the past. By reading a series of public opinion surveys from World War II, for example, students confront the language of the person interviewed and his or her fears about shortages, as well as the interviewer's reactions recorded after the interview. These human expressions provide history with color and excitement and link students directly to its cast of characters. Interpreting historical sources helps students to analyze and evaluate contemporary sources--newspaper reports, television and radio programs, and advertising. By using primary sources, students learn to recognize how a point of view and a bias affect evidence, what contradictions and other limitations exist within a given source, and to what extent sources are reliable. Essential among these skills is the ability to understand and make appropriate use of many sources of information. Development of these skills is important not only to historical research but also to a citizenship where people are able to evaluate the information needed to maintain a free society.

    Many times primary source documents are overlooked as a tool for students to connect to history. Our textbooks rarely go in depth on any topic thereby leaving out the sense of humanity. Primary sources motivate students to engage in historical inquiry as they analyze and evaluate contemporary sources. I would like to see more primary source documents used in literacy classes to support historical fiction.
