This website's main focus is centered on the history and culture of California and the role it played in national and world history. Calisphere includes photographs, diaries, recorded oral history, cultural artifacts, documents, etc. I feel this is a great resource, even for teachers not living in California, because of the variety of information presented and the prevalence of primary and secondary sources of our nation's history. 

This website has many different topics.  I like that they include topics like assembly lines and other important pieces of history that are not always featured on other sites.  Most topics that I look at included many images which students will love.

This website allows students to search images and information related to a theme, such as the Civil Rights Movement, or of a specific subject, such as Rosa Parks.

This website is a collection of manuscripts, letters, maps, printed pamphlets, etc. ranging from 1943 through the present time. This site seems to mainly focus on the Revolution, Civil War, and Reconstruction eras. One nice feature for educators is their unit lessons on popular historical events in history. Each unit is provided with visual aids, primary sources, and other learning tools associated with the topic. 

The Gilder Lehrman Institute provides users access to information regarding American history. The sight provides a tab that allows the user to search by era (i.e.) The Civil War or World War II. It also allows the user to access historic documents by collection or access through online exhibitions and encouraging the use of interactive learning tools such as videos, testimony, and timelines. The site also provides students with the neat opportunity to submit their work into essay contests and compete against students from all over the United States.

This website offers a wide variety of source documents relating to American history, such as photos, maps, letters, diary excerpts and pamphlets, from the 1400's through today.

Find links to Amazing Space's latest features, the most recent Hubble pictures, and news for educators. It has a monthly star gazing guide and homework help. It is a great site for both teachers and students.

This official White House site is geared for secondary and older. The students can learn about the branches of government both Federal and State governments. They can find contacts for the representatives in both Houses as well as the Cabinet. Blogs and podcasts of the Presidential addresses are posted here as well as current information about bills being debated. There is also historical information about the White House, Presidents, and First Ladies. 

This is a tool provided by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum to help teachers organize their instruction of the Holocaust. It speaks to the rationale for the teaching and provides guidelines for teaching about genocide, a very sensitive topic. There are also links for both teachers and students which give a comprehensive understanding of the Holocaust. The images and first person accounts are riveting.

NASA provides a wealth of resources that are safe, fun, and educational for students. It provides reliable information on space-related topics, as well as games, Web quests, and even chats with NASA experts This page would work well with primary students.

This is a great resource for teachers from the Federal Government. There are topics in every field from arts and music to U.S. time periods. There are animations, photos, primary documents, and videos. Students could take a tour of a cell in animation, make comparisons using photos, read letters and journals of famous Americans, and watch videos about lava. There are lots of resources available for free.

This is a great site to help enhance an Earth Science unit.  Students can get first hand information from NASA in an easier to read format.  One thing I particularly loved was their explanation of air pressure.  This has always been a difficult topic for me to describe.  

This site provides primary sources with lots of topics for research. Students can browse through historic newspapers, old photographs, film, sound recordings, and more. Some of the topics include American history, maps and geography, religion and philosophy, and sports and leisure. There are even short webcasts that are very informative.

This site allows its users to search collections that include: American memories, print and photography, historic newspapers, preforming arts, veteran's history, sound recordings, film, maps, and manuscripts. Users can access and research this information via digital collections (i.e.) podcast, websites, iTunes or they can search the library catalogs that will prompt them to do a basic search or guided search to ensure they are locating the correct information

This is a great site to use for primary sources practice. You can work with the activities given or do as I've done and have students compare the information they can get from primary sources versus secondary sources. The set up of the activities in investigation form can be quite appealing for students as well. I think this would be good for 5-12 grade.

Great primary source for all types of learning about money. This website has interactive games and activities that are really fun. It also has a great link for educators.

This site tells students all about the money we use every day.  There is also a teacher's section which provides lesson plan ideas.

This primary source describes the importance of the buffalo and hide painting for the Plains Indians. It is geared toward intermediate elementary students. You will find teacher information, art work and information for students to read.This would also be a good website for the Art teacher in you.

This site would be great for high school students! Students can research primary documents or they can look at online exhibits of various topics that have already been compiled. When looking at the exhibits, an explanation is given and then various photos and videos are shown. This is a great resource for primary documents!

I thought this was a good resources for documents dealing with the Holocaust. The online exhibitions are on many different topics and cover a lot of information. They include photographs, video, audio, maps, and transcripts of interviews. Each subject topic also has listing of related publications and websites for each subject. There is also a Holocaust Encyclopedia and a learning site for students specifically where you can browse different subject areas or by document type. One that I found interesting was browsing by ID cards where you can look at different individuals and it would give their photo and story and background information.

The Truman Library provides some great lessons and primary documents for elementary to secondary students. Various documents can be found including cartoons, audio clips, print resources, and photographs. A chronology of events during Truman's presidency highlights his contributions to history. Great for history or government classes to explore.

Students who are working their 4th grade research standard- Inventions unit would be able to find excellent primary sources in the links connected with famous inventors. Some famous inventors featured on this site are Alexander Graham Bell, Emiline Berliner, and Wilbur and Orville Wright.

I had to send this straight to 5th grade teachers in our district.  What a fun and valuable way to teach the difference between primary and secondary sources.  This is a clear and concise teaching of a topic that is very difficult for some students to comprehend.

This website focuses on the 1930s and the New Deal which was passed under the F.D.R.'s administration. Using a collection of letters, newspaper articles, photos, and documents, it has autobiographical stories and interviews about living during that time period. For grades 7-12, lesson plans and discussion panels are included in this resource, making it great for an American History class.

The New Deal Network is a website that focuses on the history of The Great Depression. Documents, photos, speeches, and articles can be found for teachers and students to use when researching this era of American History.
