This is a 2 page document which offers suggestions for teachers about using the online resources from the National Archives. It is a quick read with the web links right in the text for ease of use. The suggestions go beyond the obvious use for research to include links to lesson plans and resources to teach document analysis. This could be a very useful tool for teachers in all subjects.

Repositories of Primary Sources - 0 views

This site has over 5000 websites with archives all over the world. I can see that this would be useful for social studies classes to locate primary sources from other countries. Even though many of the sources are in the foreign language, many of the images could be used to support and springboard the content. There is a translator embedded into the site.

Culture and Ethnic Groups: USA.gov - 2 views

I think this particular section of USA.gov will be helpful to our social studies teachers as well as to our religion teachers. Both departments cover aspects of Cultural diversity and respect for human dignity. I think some of these documents will help demonstrate these topics.

What Makes a Primary Source a Primary Source? « Teaching with the Library of ... - 1 views

  • Instead of asking whether a particular object is a primary source, it might be more useful to ask when that artifact would be a primary source.
  • When would this image be a primary source? When would it be a secondary source? Why is it important to know the difference? What could your students learn from studying this image?
  •
I can really relate to this article because when I taught 5th grade, students needed to identify primary and secondary sources.  We had many discussions because this can be a confusing topic (not only for 5th graders).

This page is put on by the US Census Bureau. This would be a great resource for children doing research on their own state, or any other state. Students can also learn about why the census is done every ten years as well as take quizzes about the census information found. Fun site for kids!

The U.S. Census Bureau has given students a great resource to learn about why we take a census, and facts about individual states.

This site would be great for high school students! Students can research primary documents or they can look at online exhibits of various topics that have already been compiled. When looking at the exhibits, an explanation is given and then various photos and videos are shown. This is a great resource for primary documents!

Archives Ronald Reagan Presidential Library - 1 views

Find correspondence between Reagan and Soviet leaders as well as a draft of the speech Reagan delivered at the Berlin Wall. These are some of the primary sources available at the site. There is also a whole unit on Reagan and the Cold War as well as other events that took place during his presidency. High school students in history classes would benefit most from this site.

The National Archives site allows users to find primary sources within the seven categories found under "Research by Topic". Students and teachers would use this site mostly for social studies, history, and science. I was able to find mostly photos, but some other documents as well. This could be used for any age group, but I think most of the content would be for middle or high school students.

At this website, users will find photos, diary entries, patents, and other artifacts documenting the inventions of the Wright brothers. I think that this site could be used by students in grades 4-12. Science and history teachers would find this site most useful. I thought that it was a little easier for younger users to navigate than some of the other sites I have found.

When students are asked to research the Civil War, this website provides a variety of documents that are interesting and helpful to students.  I enjoyed looking at documents that were personal stories from the war.  I think students will also like reading about the Civil War from multiple perspectives.
