A PAttern LAnguAge of SustAinAbility - 0 views

  •
The aim of this work is a cross-disciplinary integration of ideas specifically relevant to permaculture design and the physical structure of human settlements. although this work is ambitious in scope, I feel this is an important element of the writing, to present an overview such that the reader is able to see the inter-relations of many ideas relevant to design. This is a synthesis of a kind which I believe has so far not been attempted.

A blog post with lots to explore on sustAinAble city design

I am particularly struck by the idea of decomposing problems into sub-problems whilts paying attention to the intersection of these so that a sub-team can work on a bounded project and konw that what they solve will link well to problems on all sides ... I have looked at the Ushahidi software a number of times but don't have the capacity to run it or fully understand it -- a joint project anyone?

I really liked this video showing the process of "Holistic Pattern Mining" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=plpwld6dIms&feature=share&list=PLJgEdsvavJ1Un66I1Pf--cJEOunbjCFBp I am also wondering about Morphological analysis for solving these complex issues. Does anyone have any experience with it? - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morphological_analysis_%28problem-solving%29 I would be interested in working on such a project.

Design Process in Education - Thinking Skills for Problem Solving - 1 views

  •
"Here is a brief overview of the main ideas:     a model of Science Process (showing its coherent strategies for thinking-and-action), developed for my PhD project, was later generalized into a broader Design Process that describes the flexibly improvised creative-and-critical thinking we use for almost everything in life, when we solve problems by designing better products, activities, strategies, and theories."

Design as Learning-or "Knowledge Creation"-the SECI Model - 1 views

  •
Designers often speak of design as a process. Typically, design thinking leads to design making, which leads to artifacts. Yet the design process also leads to something more-to new knowledge. Thus, we might characterize designing as a form of learning

Kitchen Of The Future, Methane digestor, Mycelium to Decompose Plastic Waste - 1 views

  •
Have been drawing allot of inspiration from this one! Particularly love the idea of a cutting board that leads foods scraps into a methane digester. Definitely need a better kitchen composting system that is easy and effective for the modern kitchen design. Perhaps for people who are living in cities or tight areas and do not have land to use the compost effectively.

Interesting article on the The aboriginal concept of time - 1 views

  •
An intresting pAssAge from the Articel thAt reminds me Also of the permAculture zones: Some cultures do not perceive time As An exclusively lineAr phenomenon And their time cAlendArs consist of multiple And simultAneously existing time cAtegories such As 'prActicAl time', 'sociAl time', 'religious time', 'dreAm time', etc. MAny Indigenous people And A number of non- Indigenous cultures do not perceive time As lineAr And describe it As hAving A 'circulAr' or 'cyclic' form. According to such A conceptuAlisAtion of time, time is perceived As 'stAtic' And the individuAl person is 'in the centre of time' (i.e. surrounded by concentric 'time circles'). Life events Are plAced in time Along And Across the 'time circles' According to their relAtive importAnce to the individuAl And his or her respective community (i.e. more importAnt events Are plAced closer to the individuAl And Are perceived As being closer in time; unimportAnt or irrelevAnt events occupy peripherAl time circles, Although some of them could hAve hAppened very recently According to lineAr or 'prActicAl' concept time).
