Variance remains a source of confusion (about which I can't bother to give too much attention), I wonder how the broad range of Diigo users — groups in particular — will react over time.
On the plus side: I'm just beginning to enjoy applying a preferred colour. Only rarely (my rule of thumb is that a riot of colour may be not appreciated by viewers) but when I do opt for something other than yellow, I quite like it.
(I'm not sure about the current palette, but that's a separate topic, probably an old one.)
Now, I regularly enjoy using the four colours, for example http://tinyurl.com/googlewave-chandler-007 (Invitation to Google Wave in exchange for development of one simple web page).
There remain problems with the method of application of colour. The contextual menu, and the icon from which the menu drops, are very aggravating in Diigolet 4.0b14.

Summary: feeling better about it :)
