Literary criticism should be utilized "in order to make what is implicit in a book finely explicit" (Bloom, 2000, p. 19). Readers, students and teachers, should use the tools of critical literary theory and not be used by them. Literary criticism is a method of understanding, but the theory relies on developing self-understanding as well, and it is that desire to understand ourselves and the world that pushes me and my students to read.

A great site that outlines the steps in creating a film trailer and some examples of tools/resources to use. For this task students create a film trailer from a book.

Whether for controlled assesment or exam, writing about a play needs extra care. You will perhaps only have read the play in class so take care to keep in mind that plays are written for the stage, not the page.

It is important to show your awareness of the genre of a text. Macbeth is above all a drama, intended to make its impact in performance on the stage. This can sometimes get forgotten when you are reading the play from a book in class or studying at home! When writing on Macbeth in your critical essays for Higher English, you should:
