MAYA HOTELS RECENTLY celebrated the 25th anniversary of its first ground-up hotel, Holiday Inn Express & Suites Belmont in Belmont, North Carolina. The event marked the hotel's evolution from a 65-room establishment in 1999 to a modern 92-key hotel, while showcasing original site plans, franchise approval letters, snapshots from the 1999 grand opening and earned awards over the years. IHG Hotels & Resorts representative Jason Miller, local government officials, along with associates, community members, vendors and investors attended the event. "We came to the United States with nothing, but we knew one thing - this is the land of opportunity," said Baldev Thakor, Maya Hotels' cofounder. "We knew we wanted to build a Holiday Inn Express in this community and we knew there were many guests not being served," J.D. Deva, Maya Hotels cofounder, said. "Here we are, 25 years later, and it has been a remarkable journey."

Geoff Ballotti, president and CEO of Wyndham Hotels & Resorts, was recognized by the UJA Federation of New York for his professional and philanthropic achievements at its annual Hospitality Division reception on June 4 at the New York Marriott Marquis. The New York event raised $600,000 to support UJA Federation's global crisis relief efforts, the Federation said in a statement. The UJA Hospitality Division committee is chaired by Jonathan Tisch, co-chairman of the board of Loews Corporation and executive chairman of Loews Hotels. "For 15 years, Wyndham has supported UJA and its work caring for those in need while fostering diverse communities," Ballotti said in January when UJA-Federation announced the recognition. "Together with my hospitality colleagues, we'll celebrate UJA's work and its impact on communities worldwide."

Jessica Janis, director and practice leader for hospitality at Corning Optical Communications LLC, is appointed the new honorary trustee of the AHLA Foundation. Janis will now serve as a member on its board of trustees, AHLA Foundation said in a statement. The Restoring Brand USA Act took another step toward passage, clearing the U.S. House Committee on Energy and Commerce. The bill would renew the program aimed at promoting international travel to the U.S. Brand USA has generated $56 billion to the U.S. economy since 2013 and supported more than 45,000 jobs each year, according to Rep. Gus Bilirakis of Florida, a sponsor of the bill. The program is funded by international visitors and private contributions, and the decline in international travel during the COVID-19 pandemic has led to a loss of that funding, Bilirakis said. The bill would direct the Treasury Department to allow this program to access critical resources, funded by foreign traveler visa fees, for the next few years. "The travel and tourism industry was one of the hardest hit sectors during the pandemic. As we seek to restore our way of life and fully recover, we cannot overlook the work that must be done to renew this powerful engine of economic growth for communities across the nation," Bilirakis said. "Brand USA has proven itself as a successful catalyst for spurring tourism to the U.S. We need that catalyst now more than ever to help rebuild the industry and spur job growth. EV HOTELS, A new technology-centric hotel brand founded by Ken Patel, is entering the "metaverse" by way of a partnership with "metavestor" club BAPESWORLD. Patel said his will be the first hotel company to play in the still fluidly defined metaverse, essentially a combination of online gaming, virtual reality, cyber meeting spaces and ecommerce. When completed, EV Hotels will include a "crypto trade floor" in partnership with EV Hotel has partnered with cryptocurrency and NFT exchange Chicago Digital Exchange where the crypto trading community can meet in person to share information and expertise. Individual traders and companies will be able to buy membership trading rights through CDX that will include discounted exchange fees and other exchange amenities at the EV Hotel trading floors. Under the new agreement, BAPES will be featured in the "non-fungible tokens" lobby where it will have NFTs for sale for in-person and in the metaverse. "Ventures like this are new to the hospitality and digital world, and that is why I am excited to announce the partnership between EV Hotel and BAPE," Patel said. "This sort of partnership usually does not come to market, and to have metaverse in the same sentence with hospitality is unheard of. The world's first hotel brand to hit the metaverse. A new Hilton Garden Inn is now open in the SilverLake Crossings project in Grapevine, Texas. It is owned by NewcrestImage led by Mehul Patel, chairman and CEO and is the company's third tri-branded hotel. The 152-room hotel is adjacent to one of the company's dual-brand properties that includes a 181-room Courtyard by Marriott and a 120-suite TowneSuites by Marriott that opened in December 2013. The Hilton Garden Inn is two miles from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport. SilverLake Crossings is a 52-acre multi-use community and the entire "hotel campus" offers 453 rooms, two lobby bars, multiple dining options, and more than 20,000 square feet of meeting space at the nearby SilverLake 2200 Conference Center.

The Home2 Suites by Hilton Whitestown Indianapolis NW is now open in Whitestown, Indiana. It is owned by the Jetha Group with Sumeet Jetha as president of operations and managed by Hotel Equities. The 107-room hotel is near Grand Park Sports Campus, Indiana Motor Speedway, Amerisource Bergen, Indy Car Exchange and Indianapolis International Airport. Amenities include a combined laundry and fitness area, indoor pool and Digital Key check-in. During its opening weekend, Home2 Suites Whitestown Indianapolis donated all of its proceeds to So Big, an organization that provides assistance to women facing unexpected pregnancies. "We are excited to open our doors to travelers visiting metro Indianapolis and serving our community," said Keith Adkins, the hotel's general manager. "Whitestown and the surrounding area is a great place to visit and stay for a while with an abundance of amenities at your door step, including nearby shopping and dining."

The pandemic has led to several other changes as well, the report found. With a reimagined workplace and new routines and habits in place, travelers will be looking for more grounding and balance in their travel schedules," the report said. New and refreshed hobbies are leading to a more informed, sophisticated, and, in some cases, in-shape 2022 travelers, the report said. This trend is expected to drive demand for new fitness and culinary options, as well as unique travel experiences.

The AC Hotel by Marriott Greenville Downtown is open in Greenville, South Carolina. It is owned by Auro Hotels led by Dharmendra D.J. Rama as president and CEO. The 8-story, 196-room upscale hotel is in Camperdown Plaza near Falls Park, the Reedy River, the Peace Center Performing Arts center, Kroc Center Greenville, the Shoeless Joe Jackson Museum and Sirrine Stadium. It includes seven restaurants and bars, including the tapas bar Paloma, the rooftop Juniper and The Press Room speakeasy. "The opening of the AC Hotel Greenville Downtown and Paloma marks an exciting milestone for Auro Hotels," Rama said. "This project is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity due to its location, scale, level of detail and amenities, as well as a unique opportunity to celebrate our hometown of Greenville. The hotel, along with the thoughtfully-curated food and beverage concepts, will be treasured by visitors and the local community for generations." DAVID KONG, THE recently retired president and CEO of Best Western Hotel Group, is the inaugural recipient of the Arne Sorenson Social Impact Leadership Award. The award, sponsored by the American Hotel & Lodging Association, the American Hotel & Lodging Foundation and The BHN Group, is named after the late Arne Sorenson, the former president and CEO of Marriott International who passed away in February. Kong will be recognized during the AHLA Foundation's fundraising gala, the Night of a Thousand Stars on Jan. 23, as well as during the 21st Annual Americas Lodging Investment Summit in Los Angeles on Jan. 25, according to a press release from AHLA. The award will be presented annually to a senior-level executive in the lodging industry to recognize their leadership and community engagement. Nominations are reviewed by AHLA's executive committee and representatives from ALIS.

HOTEL INVESTMENT GROUP has purchased the property in San Marcos, California, on which they will build a Home2 Suites by Hilton. The San Diego-based company is led by Darshan Patel as CEO. Construction on the 110-room Home2 Suites is slated to begin in summer 2022 at the 1.66-acre property and is estimated to be complete by late 2023. It will be pet-friendly with a pool, fitness center and ?? square feet of meeting rooms. "The hospitality industry is finally starting to rebound from the challenges of the last two years, putting us in a prime position to continue expanding HIG's portfolio," Patel said. "Bringing a Home2 Suites to San Marcos will provide a much-needed extended-stay hotel option for the medical community at Palomar Hospital and for customers visiting the area's premier golf courses and nearby LEGOLAND California."

VISION HOSPITALITY GROUP will celebrate its 25th anniversary in April. The company, led by Mitch Patel as president and CEO, is now making plans for the next quarter century. Founded in 1997, Vision Hospitality began with a Homewood Suites by Hilton, Chattanooga/Hamilton Place Patel developed in Chattanooga, Tennessee, where the company is still headquartered. Then, as the U.S. economy struggled to overcome the 9/11 attacks of 2001, Patel went on to develop 10 more hotels. "Here, VHG learned agility and how to pivot, gaining a deeper understanding of how to successfully adapt to the ebb and flow of the hospitality and financial industries," the company said in a statement. The TownePlace Suites by Marriott Tuscaloosa University Area is now open in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. It is owned by Chattanooga, Tennessee-based Vision Hospitality Group, led by Mitch Patel as president and CEO. The 93-suite hotel is near the University of Alabama, the Alabama Museum of Natural History, Paul W. Bryant Museum, and Tuscaloosa Amphitheater. Amenities include an indoor saltwater pool and a fitness center. It is pet friendly. "As the top sports destination in the state, over half a million visitors pass through Tuscaloosa every year," Patel said. "We are excited to join the community by offering fans and families visiting the campus, a new, extended stay experience."

A FEDERAL JUDGE in Florida has accomplished what travel and hospitality organizations have been advocating for months: ending a government mask mandate on airplanes and other forms of transportation. While the government had planned to keep the mandates in place until at least May, critics, including the U.S. Travel Association, said it had outlived its usefulness and a recent survey found most travelers agree. On Monday, U.S. District Judge Kathryn Kimball Mizelle in Tampa said in her ruling that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had overstepped its authority in issuing the mask mandate, according to CNBC.com. The Transportation Security Administration later announced it would no longer enforce the mandate, although the CDC continues to recommend that people wear masks on public transit. Several major airlines announced that masks would not longer be required for passengers. Delta Airlines said in a statement that employees and customers could continue wearing masks if they chose. Also, the company said some enforcement of the mandate may continue in the short term as news of the TSA decision is spread, but communications to customers and in-airport signage and announcements would be updated to say that masking is now optional.

Sonesta Essential Plainfield, an upper-midscale hotel with 67 rooms, is now open in Indianapolis. The property, owned by Bipin Patel, is the second Sonesta Essential location to launch since the brand's introduction in January. The hotel is near Pioneer Park, Sodalis Nature Park, Indianapolis International Airport, the Indianapolis Zoo, Zip City Indy and the Indiana War Memorial & Museum. Amenities include a fitness center.
