Shell, Rolls-Royce and Airbus call for swifter movement on green jet fuel - NewsBreak - 0 views

  •
To me this is how leadership leads - The current UN plans want at least 10% of fuel used in global aviation to be sustainable by 2030. The head of Rolls Royce, manufacturer of aircraft engines, feels the industry needs to move quicker. He has committed to making sure their Trent engine can run purely on sustainable fuel by 2023. And Shell has committed to increasing their production tenfold by 2025.

New platform speeds up effort to turn crops into fuel - 0 views

  •
Princeton researchers have developed a new way to make fuel from cellulose-Earth's most abundant organic compound, found in all plant cells-speeding up a notoriously slow chemical process and in some cases doubling energy yields over comparable methods. Cellulosic biomass has long been seen as a key ingredient in curbing greenhouse gas emissions, providing the feedstock for a renewable and clean-burning transportation fuel. The U.S. Department of Energy has conducted a series of studies showing that at least one billion tons of biomass could be sustainably harvested each year in the United States without disrupting forests or food production to produce biofuels, largely from cellulose.

Corporate sustainability fails by selling more stuff - Futurity - 1 views

  •
Article explains that even though 'greener" decisions are being made, the increase in wealth and subsequent demand negates most green efforts just due to volume. For example, we make more fuel efficient cars than we did 20 or 30 years ago, but we are producing 2x as many

'This is our last chance': Biden urged to act as climate agenda hangs by a thread | Cli... - 0 views

  •
"The administration's multitrillion-dollar social spending package, widely considered the most comprehensive climate legislation ever put forward in the US, must survive razor-thin Democratic majorities in Congress...The bill includes a program of payments and penalties to ensure utilities phase out fossil fuels from America's electricity supply, a huge expansion in tax credits for clean energy and new restrictions on methane, a potent greenhouse gas that is emitted from oil and gas drilling."

One giant leap for capitalistkind: private enterprise in outer space | Humanities and S... - 1 views

  •
Despite its humanistic, universalizing pretensions, however, NewSpace does not benefit humankind as such but rather a specific set of wealthy entrepreneurs, many of them originating in Silicon Valley, who strategically deploy humanist tropes to engender enthusiasm for their activities. We describe this complex as 'capitalistkind'. Moreover, the arrival of capitalism in space is fueled by the expansionary logic of capital accumulation. Outer space serves as a spatial fix, allowing capital to transcend its inherent terrestrial limitations. In this way, the ultimate spatial fix is perhaps (outer) space itself. We are seeing a big back lash for the billionaire space race. People don't understand why we're spending all this money for space when we have so many problems on earth.

Honeywell Is Turning Low-Grade Plastic Waste Into High-Quality Oil - 0 views

  •
If we can get all that plastic out of the ocean and use it to power the ocean-plastic-grabbing-machines, then this could be huge for the environment! "Honeywell International Inc. says it developed a commercially viable method to melt down low-grade plastic waste and turn it back into oil that's good enough to feed into a refinery."

Solar Power is Being Used by Oil Companies to Power Drilling Equipment - 1 views

  •
Companies are using Solar Power for Steel Production which in turn is being used for Oil Drilling. Author Tina Casey says, "Oh the irony, it burns! Solar power is supposed to open the door on a new era in which humans and their ecosystems exist in harmony, but for now the record is still stuck on fossil energy." "It is the largest on-site solar facility in the US dedicated to a single customer, with more than 750,000 solar panels providing nearly all the plant's annual electricity demand," bp enthused in a press release earlier this week. "This will enable the mill to produce some of the world's greenest steel and steel products."

Amazon, Ikea and other big companies commit to zero-emission shipping by 2040 - The Was... - 0 views

  •
Mega companies are pledging zero carbon emissions. This puts pressure on the shippers to get the business of these mega companies. Failure to reach the 20240 goal could result in lost revenue. Interesting use of coporate pressure to make things happen. Once a few of the companies reach zero emissions, the others will face considerable pressure to do so as well.
