A tampon is a mass of cotton or rayon; or a mixture of the two inserted into the body to absorb bodily fluid. Organic cotton tampons are made from only 100% cotton. The most common type in daily use is disposable and designed to be inserted into the vagina during menstruation to absorb the flow of menstrual fluid.

Panties, knickers, or undies are a form of underwear, usually light and snug-fitting, designed to be worn by women or girls in the area directly below the waist. Typical components include a waistband (often elastic), a crotch to cover the genital area (usually lined with absorbent material such as cotton), and a pair of leg openings (also often elastic). They have either no legs or in some cases very short ones.

The contest between the two major varieties of pad (reusable and disposable pads) comes later, but first, we have to acknowledge the revolutionary existence of a sanitary napkin in a female's life. In older times, not only was the cloth used to prevent the menstrual flow but also issues like menstruation were hidden under covers. Apart from the cloth, there were rags, cotton or sheep's wool used by women to stem their blood flow.
