Who are the digital natives? And what do they want? | Zero Percent Idle - 0 views

  • When I was a kid, I never got to customize The Mickey Mouse Club.
    • anonymous

I did...my friends and I played games based on those shows, customizing them for ourselves.  Sure, we couldn't video it and put it on the web but that's a different question.
  • A twentysomething in the workforce wants the new BlackBerry, Palm, or iPhone not because the old one is no longer cool, but because the new one does so much more.
    • anonymous

Wanting the latest tool because it does cool stuff doesn't make you an innovator.  It makes you a consumer of the kind that every company wants.  Remember, Steve Jobs is older than I am!

California Schools Move Ahead With Healthier Meals Despite Backtrack In Congress - 0 views

  •
This story comes to us courtesy of California's EdSource Extra. A week after Congress backtracked on some key components of landmark school nutrition legislation, nutrition advocates are saying that the battle for healthy school food needs to be fought district by district, along the lines of what several California districts are already doing.

The Elusive Big Idea - NYTimes.com - 0 views

But here's the irony: I'm going to post this article to twitter and probably start a conversation along with the comments that are below.  Is not having big ideas a big idea?  Are we still wrestling with the big questions that people like Friedan and Freud and McLuhan especially posed?  I think there is a lot of conversation out there around the influence of media in our lives, with people choosing to disconnect and discussion about appropriate uses, etc.  What do you think?

Teachers Should Know Copyright from Wrong | Edutopia - 1 views

  • "Fair use in the educational setting is defined more broadly but does not encompass all uses," warns Ensign.
  • Ensign says a teacher may not be allowed to show the film The Lion King to the class simply because it was raining and the kids were squirrelly. It could be shown only if the class were doing a study of Disney films or were engaged in the study of a related subject.
  •
Some great information on when you can or cannot use the same piece of copyrighted material.

What is Web 2.0 to a digital native? - YouTube - 2 views

  •
A great video that shows the extent to which students today are digital natives.
  •
Good find, Sharon. I think this really adds to the metaphor that digital natives are "native speakers" of technology. Much like native speakers of a language can use complex grammar without thinking about it or knowing the labels that linguists place on it, digital natives are easily using complex technology oblivious to all the research the "digital immigrants" are doing to try to understand it.

Basically, this site condenses links to websites explaining all about what teachers can do without breaking any copyright laws, to websites with suggestions or ideas about how to teach students about copyrights, and the first site in the list is to images that are copyright free!
  •
This website is a wonderful resource for any teacher. It provides links to guide the teacher in fair use laws, suggests ways to teach about copyright laws, and provides a link to copyright-free images! It's really a one -stop-shop for everything copyright.

Copyright Guidelines - 1 views

  • Copyright laws do allow teachers some uses of some copyrighted materials. Fair use guidelines consider: The purpose of the use (educational vs. commercial) The nature of the work (published and fact-based vs. highly creative) The amount of the work used The market effect of the use on the work.
  • The educational exemption applies if:The copyrighted material is used in a classroom or school library. The material is used as a part of face-to-face instruction with students. A teacher must be in charge and the material must relate directly to the subject being taught. The amount of the work used is only as much as is required for this lesson. The material must be legally acquired. (Purchased, rented, or borrowed from a library.)
  •
A great and easy-to-read article for future teachers. Also has a good chart of what is permitted and what is not permitted!

An interesting commentary on what digital natives are doing with technology. It seems a little too optimistic, however, but the possibilities for positive enrichment for kids and teens with technology is compelling.

Creative Commons v. Copyright - About Freelance Writing - 1 views

This is an interesting point because we've been drilled throughout high school and college to cite sources.
  • The commons can be defined as those things we hold in common as a people. The National Park system is one example of the commons, so are the state parks.
  • Public
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • These extensions mean, among other things, every generation fewer and fewer works will find their way into public domain. Public domain essentially means a work is no longer protected and anyone is free to use it.
  • Public
  • Public
  • A Creative Commons license doesn’t replace your copyright so much as let you decide what, if any rights you’re willing to let go of.
  • Quoting the non-legalese version is defined this way: This license lets others distribute, remix, tweak, and build upon your work, even commercially, as long as they credit you for the original creation. This is the most accommodating of licenses offered, in terms of what others can do with your works licensed under Attribution.
