Loved this video Sarah...esp since it started out with Google Maps locating Saskatoon, Sask, Canada! Saskatoon is about 2 1/2 hours north from my hometown of Regina, Sask. (I might be a bit intimidated by the student in the video though...holy cow!! ..."That's your job" !!!!)
  •
Thanks Sharon, I thought that it was a great video too, and I liked the kids eyes and faces he made! haha I didn't even know he was pointing to a place in Canada, good job picking up on that !

Are we prepared to teach the "Digital Natives"? This is such a cute video I couldn't help but share. The young boy asks a very important question- are we preparing our students to enter the digital world?

What Digital Native children can teach the rest of us about technology - 0 views

  • “focused on giving children a real voice in the broader, often very adult, discussion of future technologies and real-world problem solving.”
  • they can teach us not only about their own needs and desires, but also about our own future preferences and how technology might help us solve bigger, global problems
  • digital natives allow us to see unrestrained possibilities for Web-based developments
  • ...4 more annotations...
  • We found that today’s children intuit a very seamless connection between online and offline worlds
  • A strong trend in the pictures the children drew was a break down in the barrier between the physical and digital worlds, with children appearing to see no difference between ‘real’ and ‘computer-based’ activities.
  • today’s children see technological devices as a natural extension of themselves
  • Current initiatives include Trash to Treasure, another illustration-based study which looks to kids for new ways to recycle and manage waste

This is a great article on what our students, the "Digital Natives" can teach us about technology! I have highlighted what I found to be the most interesting and insightful quotes from the article!

Schools, the Internet, and Privacy | FunnyMonkey - 1 views

This is such a great point, we have these strict safety guidelines in the schools, yet some students may be sharing every detail about their life on Facebook, Twitter or another social media.
  • But the outcry against intrusions on privacy takes place against a backdrop where it's normal to share a steady stream of details about your life. My concern is that, if we make our schools into places where "normal" means having your browsing history tracked daily, people will take that level of supervision for granted.
  • try to make some sense about what learning can be within a context where there is a growing tension between constructive guidance and overbearing observation

Going Batty: A Bat Wequest for Second Grade: Introduction - 0 views

  •
Such a fun activity for 2nd grade students, especially around Halloween!! Students learn all about bats so that they can convince their teachers to turn the classrooms into bat caves! Each pair creates a slide about bats that is put into a slideshow to show the teachers!

Getty Images While quick online access to images, footage and music may be second nature to us now, just a decade ago it was almost unimaginable. We were the first company to license imagery online - and continue to drive the industry forward. Our goal is to inspire communicators - and give them the tools to create inspiring work of their own.

I believe that's why they don't sing it at restaurants....
  •
Yes! We can sing it in a classroom, at a party, or any other PRIVITE setting...However, on TV, in a public setting, in a movie, etc...someone has to pay!

Basically, this site condenses links to websites explaining all about what teachers can do without breaking any copyright laws, to websites with suggestions or ideas about how to teach students about copyrights, and the first site in the list is to images that are copyright free!
  •
This website is a wonderful resource for any teacher. It provides links to guide the teacher in fair use laws, suggests ways to teach about copyright laws, and provides a link to copyright-free images! It's really a one -stop-shop for everything copyright.

Butterfly Pictures, can use for Symmetry - 1 views

I saw a teacher use images of butterflies from this website for a first grade lesson on symmetry; they were printed in black and white and the students were asked to color them in using symmetrical colors--they were beautiful!!
  •
Actually here is the link for the already gray-scale and black-and-white butterflies that are used for coloring: http://www.butterflyutopia.com/butterfly_coloring_page.html

This website has some pretty cool infographics....it's also biased against the SOPA bill (a bill in Congress which could have an impact on internet use in the US), so I figured that even if it was a biased website it touched on two things we've discussed in class

What is Web 2.0 to a digital native? - YouTube - 2 views

  •
A great video that shows the extent to which students today are digital natives.
  •
Good find, Sharon. I think this really adds to the metaphor that digital natives are "native speakers" of technology. Much like native speakers of a language can use complex grammar without thinking about it or knowing the labels that linguists place on it, digital natives are easily using complex technology oblivious to all the research the "digital immigrants" are doing to try to understand it.

Part 2 of the Prensky's 2001 articles on Digital Natives. This one focuses on scientific evidence to back up what he said in part one. It also includes this interesting quote about the attention span of digital natives, which seems to contradict other research on multi-tasking: "Their attention spans are  not short for games, for example, or for anything else that actually interests them. As a result of their experiences Digital Natives crave interactivity-an immediate response to their each and every action. Traditional schooling provides very little of this compared to the rest of their world (one study showed that students in class get to ask a question every 10 hours). So it generally isn't that Digital Natives can't pay attention, it's that they choose not to."

Who are the digital natives? And what do they want? | Zero Percent Idle - 0 views

  • When I was a kid, I never got to customize The Mickey Mouse Club.

I did...my friends and I played games based on those shows, customizing them for ourselves.  Sure, we couldn't video it and put it on the web but that's a different question.
  • A twentysomething in the workforce wants the new BlackBerry, Palm, or iPhone not because the old one is no longer cool, but because the new one does so much more.
    • anonymous

Wanting the latest tool because it does cool stuff doesn't make you an innovator.  It makes you a consumer of the kind that every company wants.  Remember, Steve Jobs is older than I am!
