Big Think - We Are What You Think - 0 views

  •
What is Big Think? bigthink.com is a new and growing website, currently in its beta version, with a simple mission: This is a digital age, one in which a wealth of accessible information empowers you, the citizen-consumer. But where is the information coming from? How accurate and unprocessed is it, really? Ask yourself this: how empowered do you feel debating a television screen or a newspaper? Our task is to move the discussion away from talking heads and talking points, and give it back to you. That is Big Think's mission. In practice, this means that our information is truly interactive. When you log onto our site, you can access hundreds of hours of direct, unfiltered interviews with today's leading thinkers, movers and shakers. You can search them by question or by topic, and, best of all, respond in kind. Upload a video in which you take on Senator Ted Kennedy's views on immigration; post a slideshow of your trip to China that supports David Dollar's assertion that pollution in China is a major threat; or answer with plain old fashioned text. You can respond to the interviewee, respond to a responder or heck, throw your own question or idea into the ring. Big Think is yours. We are what you think.

Guidelines for Working with Adult Learners. ERIC Digest - 0 views

  • Known as the andragogical model, the use of learner-centered instruction--which supports addressing the needs and interests of learners--is regularly championed in the literature as the most effective way to teach adults.
  • Adults have a rich reservoir of experience that can serve as a resource for learning.
  • tend to have a life-, task-, or problem-centered orientation to learning as opposed to a subject-matter orientation
  • ...19 more annotations...
  • motivated to learn due to internal or intrinsic factors
  • herefore, adult learning in formal institutions can be viewed in terms of the direction and support needed by the learner in the following ways: learners need both direction and support, learners need direction, learners need support but are reasonably self-directing, or learners are moderately capable of providing their own direction and support
  • Even though learners may need both direction and support, they can still be involved in designing and directing their learning in meaningful ways.
  • Adult learner involvement in needs assessment initiates a partnership with the instructor
  • WWW question: Who needs What as defined by Whom, in which Who is the learners, WHAT are their needs, and WHOM are the definers
  • "How do we listen to adult learners before we design a course for them, so that their themes are heard and respected?
  • Developing an atmosphere in which adults feel both safe and challenged should be the goal
  • An ideal adult learning climate has a nonthreatening, nonjudgmental atmosphere in which adults have permission for and are expected to share in the responsibility for their learning.
  • Capitalize on the first session
  • Incorporate group work
  • Break the traditional classroom routine
  • -Use humor
  • Support opportunities for individual problem solving
  • equitable learning environment.
  • Consider their attitudes toward and knowledge about the variety of people they teach.
  • nstructors have a professional responsibility to accept every adult learner as of equal worth regardless of race, gender, ability, or background.
  • Think through the way they present their subjects or topics. T
  • Instructors must act on the belief that change and development are possible for all people and that their role is to assist the process in all learners
  • "Learning is part of a circuit that is one of life's fundamental pleasures: the [instructor's] role is to keep the current flowing" (p. 38). Instructors who have successfully engaged adults as partners by providing direction and support will have succeeded admirably.
  •
""Adults vote with their feet," a favorite adage of adult educators, is frequently used to describe a characteristic of adult learners. In most circumstances, adults are not captive learners and, if the learning situation does not suit their needs and interests, they will simply stop coming. In discussing adult education, Knowles (1980, 1984) distinguished between teacher-centered and learner-centered instruction. He promoted the latter because it viewed learners as mutual partners in the learning endeavor (Merriam and Caffarella 1991). Known as the andragogical model, the use of learner-centered instruction--which supports addressing the needs and interests of learners--is regularly championed in the literature as the most effective way to teach adults. However, Merriam and Caffarella (ibid.) assert that "adult learning in formal settings, for the most part, is still instructor designed and directed" (p. 26). Given the wide support for learner involvement, the discrepancy between adult education theory and practice is perplexing. How can instructors of adults become more learner centered in their practice? This ERIC Digest suggests guidelines and strategies that can be used in formal settings by instructors of adults to involve learners more effectively. "

Open Library - 0 views

One web page for every book ever published. It's a lofty, but achievable, goal. To build it, we need hundreds of millions of book records, a brand new database infrastructure for handling huge amounts of dynamic information, a wiki interface, multi-language support, and people who are willing to contribute their time, effort, and book data. To date, we have gathered about 30 million records (20 million are available through the site now), and more are on the way. We have built the database infrastructure and the wiki interface, and you can search millions of book records, narrow results by facet, and search across the full text of 1 million scanned books. Open Library is a project of the non-profit Internet Archive, and is funded in part by a grant from the California State Library. We have a small team of fantastic programmers who have accomplished a lot, but we can't do it alone! This is an Open project - the software is open, the data is open, the documentation is open, and the site is open.

  •
Have you ever wondered what it really means to transform your district, school, or classroom to a 1:1 environment? It is a term we hear a lot about, but not all can see it or experience it. With the takeoff of the iPad and its successor, the iPad 2, the education world is abuzz with the idea of moving towards a 1:1 environment. But is it practical? For some, it is a dream, a wish; for others, it is slowly becoming a reality. So what does a 1:1 environment look like? How will the students and teachers react? Is it the right direction to go?

iPod Literacy - 0 views

  •
While introduced as a hard drive based music player in 2001, the iPod has evolved into an essential tool for literacy in the 21st century. The availability of educational content is staggering. There are podcasts on everything from math to history to science to learning a foreign language. There is even a podcast on basket weaving. What is even more amazing is how easy it is for students and teachers to create their own digital content for the iPod. Students can then guide their own learning at their own pace, and review content on-demand. This idea of anywhere-anytime learning means the student is no longer tethered to the classroom learning environment.

5 Things You Need To Understand If You are Having Chronic Pain! - 0 views

  •
Chronic pain is a type of pain that usually lasts for weeks to months. This pain can come and go, and it can be anywhere in the body. Chronic pain can lead to anxiety, depression, and insomnia. Chronic pain is quite different from acute pain and there are some differences between the two types. People usually experience severe pain, when it is injured by a broken bone or a cut on the skin. This pain does not last long. Pain is not something that can be ignored. If it grows, it should be fixed. As fear and pain persist, one begins to think negatively. Long-term negative thoughts begin to form in his mind, a process called fear conditioning. This factor causes an increase in blood pressure and anxiety disorders. Chronic pain is difficult to treat, and results in increased pain, fear, and negative thoughts. Extreme levels of fear lead to more pain, and the cycle of pain threats can be difficult to break. One of the best pills used to treat body pain symptoms is Hydrocodone 325mg, which you can easily buy from any trusted online pharmacy, such as Pharma Health Online.

Digital Citizenship - 0 views

  •
Digital Citizenship is a concept which helps teachers, technology leaders and parents to understand what students/children/technology users should know to use technology appropriately. Digital Citizenship is more than just a teaching tool; it is a way to prepare students/technology users for a society full of technology. Too often we are seeing students as well as adults misusing and abusing technology but not sure what to do. The issue is more than what the users do not know but what is considered appropriate technology usage.

About « Ctrl-Alt-Pd - 1 views

  •
"About Our Motivation: Challenges and opportunities, created by our global society, invite teachers, administrators, and students to rethink the way they teach, lead, and learn. The rise of social networking, the ease with which information is shared, and the growth of our global economy are just a few factors that have made it obvious that the 21st century is a much different world than the 20th century. And yet, when we take a good, hard look at the culture within our schools, do we see that much has changed from yesterday to today? We may see more technology used in the classroom and maybe more discussions on the "content vs. skills" debate in the faculty rooms. But underneath it all, have things really changed? Have we successfully forged a culture where life-long learning, personal growth, and collaboration are valued and practiced among all members of the school community? In Richard DuFour's article "Why Look Elsewhere?: Improving Schools from Within," he states that "it is context-the beliefs, expectations, behaviors and norms that constitute the culture of a given school-that plays the largest role in deciding whether a professional development program will make a difference in that school." If a school's goal is to improve student achievement, and a school considers learning to be the crux of its community, then effective professional development-where teachers and administrators themselves become learners-is the bridge to achieving that goal."

Record, keep & share your voice recordings online | Voisse - 0 views

  •
Voisse has three core features at its heart - Record, keep and share. 1. Record Voisse allows users to record any audio (or sound) they choose in whatever way they want - on-line using any modern browser, phone by calling a dedicated number or uploading existing recordings. In doing so anyone, from the youngest child to the oldest adult can create recordings (Voisses). 2. Keep The heart of Voisse is a personal store for all your Voisses, called My Voisses. This area is private by default and provides users with a simple method of cataloguing and tagging their Voisses. These Voisses can then easily be grouped together to create fantastic slideshows each with their personal narrations, giving relevance and context and a rich user experience. Slideshows can be viewed on-line through a custom built viewer or downloaded to an iPod device so that they can always be with you and viewed whenever you want. The portable slideshow is in technical terms a podcast. No-one else gives the you the ability to easily create their very own podcasts. There's desktop software that does similar things to Voisse, but it's infinitely more complex and require considerable technical ability. 3. Share A core reason people choose to record audio is to share. Voisse gives you this ability, if you choose, via email or social networks such as Facebook and Twitter. Many people have things to say, experience and wisdom to pass on, things which others value. For those who have popular or unique recordings or slideshows, we have created a Marketplace where they can be bought and sold. The Voisse Marketplace offers you a unique area to create and sell your audio content.

leadingict » Qualities of effective lead teachers - 0 views

Being a lead teacher is a big responsibility and it is important to work out a 'job description' with your principal. You need to know exactly what is expected of you. A lot of lead teachers find they become over loaded with work auditing, upgrading, maintaining etc the school ICT infrastructure. You may enjoy taking on this responsibility it is just a good idea to understand the expectations of the role in the first place.
