Terminix has launched an educational website with insect lessons. The website is built around the character Harry, a praying mantis who guides visitors through resources for teachers and students. The educator center provides teachers with curriculum guides and lesson plans, created by entomologists at Audubon Insectarium and Terminix, that correlate with National Science Teacher Association standards.

"The Best Resources For Learning Research & Citation Skills September 24, 2009 by Larry Ferlazzo | 8 Comments This "The Best…" list is sort of a combination of two lists I had been thinking of making to go along with The Best Online Resources To Teach About Plagiarism (Another list to keep in mind might be The Best Reference Websites For English Language Learners - 2008). The more I thought about it, though, the more I felt that a list of engaging (and even fun) sites to teach research skills and accessible citation resources would make a good combination. Since a graduation requirement in our district is that seniors need to develop a "Senior Project," I've spent some time finding these kinds of helpful sites that might be accessible to English Language Learners.  I have to say, though, that these sites (except for the first one) would probably only be accessible to more advanced ELL's. NBC Learn has launched this website called Finishing the Dream. It chronicles the h istory of the civil rights movement. It includes more then 100 stories from NBC News archives. Materials include documentaries on significan events over the course of 60 years, including the Montgomery bus boycott; the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr.; the integration of Central High School in Little Rock, Arkansas; the Freedom Riders; and more. The content provides the opportunity for community leaders, teachers, and students to discuss the impact of the civil rights movement and to consider related modern issues that affect people today.

Memorize.com is a new learning website that allows users to create their own study guides and then share them on the web. The free site assembles user-generated content in three formats -- flash cards, multiple choice, and visual learning diagrams. The topics range from traditional school subjects, such as history, languages, and geography, to less academic categories, such as food, billiards, and television. Users can follow other users and their pages and edit other users' pages to craete their own unique page.

Fee and can be used in a variety of content areas.

Google Apps Education Training Center is a new online learning environment designed for educators and students who want to effectively use Google Apps in an educational context. The site offers six modules, including Google Apps Education Edition, apps Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sites, and other tools. The training will cover customizing apps for individual schools; organizing e-mail effectively; creating shared calendars; collaborating with others online; using documents, presentations, and spreadsheets; delivering and collecting surveys, quizzes, and feedback; developing media-rich websites; and setting up internal video portals for schools.

What appears to be free training on google apps.

This website is connected to National Geographic. It allows students to explore difficult topics such as Ecology and Geology through a game like experience. Students work on "missions" as they learn about our Earth.

I found this site through the RSS feed on Google Reader. The RSS stemmed from TechLearning. This site would probably be most applicable for 4th grade and up if it is to be used independently. I think with scaffolding, working as a whole group, and some frontloading of information, younger students could enjoy the experience as well.

Welcome to Historical Thinking Matters, a website focused on key topics in U.S. history, that is designed to teach students how to critically read primary sources and how to critique and construct historical narratives.

Looks like an interesting site. There are student investigations as well as teacher materials and strategies.

With Google Earth, you can create awesome tours, taking viewers on a virtual trip from place to place. You can enhance your tours with narration, images, videos, text, and other types of information. The tours you create can even be embedded into a website.

How to get started using google earth.

MPT has great resources for students. Some are interactive. The 8th graders like these. I use these as an activating strategy.

This is a website where I found a Who Wants to be a Millionaire game that reviews test-taking tips. I am going to use it to review with my students before the PSSA in April. Best suited for elementary I think.
