Hurricane Katrina Aftermath: In the Shadow | Retro Report | The New York Times - YouTube - 0 views

  •
In 2005 Hurricane Katrina walloped Louisiana, killing people and destroying almost everything in its path. Nothing like this had ever happened before and no one knew how to clean up after its occurrence. Clean up and rebuilding efforts like The Road Home looked better on paper than they did in practice and many were left unable to rebuild. Issues arose in many cases and grant money never met the hands of those in most need. Then seven years later, Hurricane Sandy hit the East coast and destroyed homes in New Jersey and New York and the federal government now had a benchmark to judge against and knew what not to do, the outcome of their efforts is yet to be determined

Exxon Valdez Oil Spill: In the Wake of Disaster | Retro Report | The New York Times - Y... - 0 views

  •
The Exxon Valdez Oil Spill occurred when an oil tanker tore open its hull on a reef outside of Valdez Alaska. This was the biggest oil spill so far and no one, not even the spill relief teams knew how to respond. Only 15 percent of oil was recovered and the response was embarrassingly slow. It turns out the oil companies were to blame for the spill for resisting safety precautions, and they didn't learn from their mistakes of not employing enough money and resources by the time of the BP Gulf Spill of 2010. Valdez Alaska never recovered and the environmental effects persist.

Space Shuttle Challenger Disaster: Major Malfunction | Retro Report | The New York Time... - 0 views

  •
In 1986 and 2003, NASA had its two biggest disasters ever with the explosion of the Challenger space shuttle on launch and the annihilation of the Columbia shuttle on reentry. NASA became over ambitious after the Appolo missions, attempting to launch shuttles up to 60 times a year due to their funding by private organizations who wanted the shuttles to release experiments and satellites into space. They started out successful with the original Columbia missions and then they became sloppy with the building and safety of their rocket boosters, which later caused the explosion of the Challenger rocket. NASA reevaluated its boundaries for acceptable risk and purged the members of NASA who pushed the Challenger mission through despite the risks. They stopped all launches for years Then in 2003 the Columbia shuttle had its first mission in years and a piece of foam from the rocket hit the wing of the shuttle, causing what they thought were possible damages. They made another bad call in not alerting the crew until the last minute and not investigating, changing the reentry plan, or trying to mend it while in space due to the fact that other foam had not caused issues before. The Columbia burned up on reentry after the piece of foam destroyed a heat resistant panel on the wing that acted as a weak point. NASA's biggest issue throughout all of this was refusing to learn from their mistakes, the Columbia mission could have been saved had NASA taken the proper protocols and tried harder to assess and fix the situation.

Killed in El Salvador: An American Story | Retro Report | The New York Times - YouTube - 0 views

  •
During the Civil War in El Salvador in the 1980's, four American churchwomen, who were in El Salvador for human rights work and services, were brutally murdered on the side of a road. These women were later found to have been attacked by government military guardsmen due to their work with the poor. Two top El Salvadorian generals were found to have covered up their murders as well as countless other crimes committed by the El Salvadorian government and military throughout the Civil War. The US withdrew aid for El Salvador before eventually intervening in the Civil War, and worked to hold those who murdered the church women and several other Americans responsible. The two Salvadorian generals were also convicted by the US after they were found seeking asylum in Florida.

The Greatest Heist You've Never Heard Of | Retro Report | The New York Times - YouTube - 0 views

  •
In the 70's antiwar movements against the Vietnam War were raging and the FBI was secretly keeping tabs on protesters. They would go through people's mail, monitor their calls, and other invasive actions to monitor people they found dangerous, even famous individuals, politicians, and diplomats. In Media PA, just outside of Philadelphia, three political protesters broke into the FBI building and took documents proving the surveillance which they distributed to newspapers. The information put the FBI and its head, J Edgar Hoover, in deep trouble with the American public and revealed illegal means. They were never found until they revealed themselves decades later. I think this was a pretty interesting story since it took place so close to home and it features regular people performing impossible feats.

This is a Retro Report on the murder trial of a British nanny who was accused of killing baby Matthew through a little known abuse syndrome called "shaken baby". "Shaken Baby Syndrome" has become a much-debated accusation as it is a huge criminal charge for a triad of signs that can come from a multitude of causes and places and are often not directly witnessed when they occur. It is difficult to diagnose with total certainty "shaken baby" and that type of child abuse
