Student Contest | Celebrate 2011 by Writing Raps About the Year's News - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  •
"Each December, we take a look back at the year's big news with quizzes, teaching ideas and a roundup of links to interesting retrospectives around the Web. And since we're big fans, every year we link to Flocabulary's Year in Rap. Flocabulary is an online learning platform that features educational songs, videos and resources for grades K-12. For the last two years, Flocabulary has created a Year in Rap as a supplement to its popular Week in Rap, which is produced in partnership with Channel One News. This year we thought it would be fun to formally collaborate with them and offer a contest in which students are invited to write lyrics for their own mini "Years in Rap." Since Flocabulary is in the business of using rap for teaching and learning, they were enthusiastic - and even offered to provide a lesson plan to guide teachers or students new to composing in rhyme. Below, you'll find the contest rules, the lesson plan and a rubric to show what we'll be looking for in the lyrics your students post. The contest deadline is Jan. 6."

10 Awesome Free Tools To Make Infographics - 0 views

  •
Information graphics, visual representations of data known as infographics, keep the web going these days. Web users, with their diminishing attention spans, are inexorably drawn to these shiny, brightly coloured messages with small, relevant, clearly-displayed nuggets of information. They're straight to the point, usually factually interesting and often give you a wake-up call as to what those statistics really mean."

"Uploaded by takepart on May 13, 2010 Want to find out how a bill REALLY becomes a law? It's not as simple as it used to be back in the Schoolhouse Rocks days. Our Congressmen have to choose between our interests and the money of major corporations...No wonder why he's still stuck on the steps to the Capitol building."

From Free Tech. for teachers: "Physics Central is divided into four main sections; Discover, Explore, Ask & Experiment, and Physics Buzz. It is the Ask & Experiment section that is probably of most interest to teachers. In Ask & Experiment teachers will find coloring and activities books for students. Ask & Experiment also includes an "ask a physicist" section in which students can ask questions or find the answers to roughly 100 previously answered common questions such as "why do ice cubes sometimes stick to your skin?"
