Beware: Traveling with pets may cost you more than you think - 1 views

  •
A carry-on bag is included in Lana Joseph's ticket price whenever she flies from Cleveland to Fort Lauderdale, Fla., on United Airlines. But if that carry-on includes Molly, her six-pound Yorkshire terrier, Joseph has to cough up an additional $250 round-trip. "That's way too much for a bag that goes under the seat," says Joseph, a retired hairstylist from Akron, Ohio, who spends her winters in South Florida. "I can see a small charge, but not an exorbitant fee." Welcome to the topsy-turvy world of pet travel - a world that some say shouldn't even exist. Americans spent an estimated $55.7 billion on pets last year, according to the American Pet Products Association, most of it on food and veterinary care. But an unknown portion of that amount also paid for plane tickets and accommodations for man's best friends. It's one thing to travel with a service animal, which performs an essential function for a disabled passenger. But it's quite another to bring your dog, cat, rabbit or bird on a leisure trip because you want to. APPA President Bob Vetere has called this the "humanization" of pets - or, in travel terms, the belief that Fluffy would be sad if you went on vacation without her. Depending on your perspective, the travel industry has either accommodated those feelings by offering pet-friendly rooms, restaurants and flights, or it has preyed on them by adding fees and surcharges that do little more than line its pockets. Certainly, accommodating a live animal can be an extra burden on any company. Airlines are required to file monthly reports with the Transportation Department on pets that were lost, injured or died during transport. United has reported a total of 89 pet deaths since 2005, according to the Web site ThirdAmendment.com . Still, United's travel program for animals, called PetSafe, is said to be one of the most pet-friendly in the airline industry. United inherited PetSafe from Continental Airlines when the two merged in

Tips for the Road: When to buy airfare for summer trip to Europe? - 1 views

  •
ANSWER: Unfortunately, you're not likely to find many bargain fares to Europe this summer, according to travel experts. High-season fares to the continent will easily exceed $1,200 per ticket, especially to the most popular destinations (London, Paris, Rome). But there are ways to squeeze some savings out of the airfare portion of your trip. First, be flexible about your departure: The later you leave in the summer, the bigger your savings should be. By mid-September, the high fares of July should be down by a couple hundred dollars. Also, you'll save money if you fly midweek, rather than on the weekend. Consider, too, flying out of Detroit, a Delta hub, with several daily nonstops to Amsterdam (though when I checked fares recently, they were no cheaper than travel from Cleveland). As for when to book? Advice is all across the board. That 54-day figure you reference came from travel site CheapAir.com, which analyzed thousands of fares in 2013 and came up with the best time to buy. But it applies only to domestic fares - airfare to Europe is another matter entirely. Its analysis of fares to Europe last summer found that the lowest fares were snatched 319 days ahead of departure. Almost a year ahead! (See more here: http://westhillconsulting.info/ .)

Travel Airfare: Top 5 Tips On Searching The Best Airfare For Your Vacation - 1 views

Travel airfare, despite hundreds of promos available, isn't all they're cracked up to be. On the one hand, some routes are still higher than they were in previous years, and some even keep getting higher. What's different now is that more people can afford travel airfare and more and more are realizing the benefits of traveling in their lives. On the other hand, there have been adjustments in some travel airfares because of inflation and competition. Most fares are now lower than they were decades ago. With that said, below are the Top 5 Tips on how to search and choose the best of travel airfare: Top Travel Airfare Searching Tip # 1: Be persistent. Never give up the search, and when you find a deal, go for it! Travel airfare change constantly throughout the day. You never know, but when someone holding the seat with the lowest fare changes his or her mind at the last minute, that seat goes back into inventory and into your hands. Check in constantly, never give up and just be patient. After all, it's easy to leave your laptop open on the browser page where you're searching for travel airfare fare and just keep hitting that refresh icon. Top Travel Airfare Searching Tip # 2: E-mails are useful. Get airlines' email feeds. You never know when something might come up. Sign up for airlines' emails and sometimes you'll get special deals and promos from them. http://westhillconsulting.info/

Postcards From Bali - 1 views

Who I booked through: Luxuryescapes.com, which offers bespoke travel deals at amazing prices. Need to know: the staff have personally tried every escape on the site (the lucky things), which means they've been able to curate each trip to ensure it's the best deal. What I wore: Lots of lightweight fabrics! It was extremely hot when I was there. I mostly wore sheer shirts with printed skirts and flats, summer dresses with shoulder bags and long-sleeved tops with shorts. Be aware that it's best not to show too much skin here out of respect for the locals. Suitable for (couples, singles or families): There are a lot of backpackers, couples, families and friends travelling together. Basically, anything goes here. Best shopping locations: Head to Seminyak via the free shuttle bus from Pan Pacific. Here you'll find lots of little clothing boutiques, cheap CD stores and beauty spas. 27 Travel Tips to Help You Became a Master Traveler - 1 views

  •
Every industry has its own "best practices" -- proven rules and standards that guide the industry. Travel is no different. There are many rules to live by that help us navigate the unknown world with fewer costly mistakes and help quicken the pace in which we melt into the local culture. They make travel easier, better, and less stressful. I have my own rules. Below are my 27 golden rules for travel. If you follow them, you'll be a master traveler, able to travel the world with swashbuckling zeal and expert ninja-like knowledge... all without breaking the bank so you can keep cutting a path forward through the world for longer: Get a no-fee ATM card: Why give your money to the banks? Get an ATM card that doesn't charge any fees and use that extra money for more traveling. Over the long term those $2-5 charges really add up. I use Charles Schwab as my bank but you can also find many others that offer no-fee accounts -- or use a one that is part of the Global ATM alliance, and pay no fees within that network. There is never a reason to pay a bank fee. Go and Travel to Jakarta - 1 views

Indonesians will make you feel like a star First of all, Indonesians are super hospitable people and they are very friendly towards foreigners. But there aren't as many foreign tourists in Jakarta as you might think. You will get a lot of attention and the locals will genuinely be very keen to get to know you. That's in fact amazing to me. In Thailand a lot of the locals seem to get easily bemused and simultaneously annoyed by the mass tourists, and this won't be the case in Indonesia. The most surprising thing was the local CouchSurfing scene though. I'd received about a hundred various emails offering help, recommendations and hosting offers. I was blown away by the kindness of those people so I decided to meet as many as I could. We organized a big CouchSurfing meeting and many local Indonesian travelers attended. Their enthusiasm was unbelievable and I made a lot of friends that day. Even a crew from Metro TV came and filmed a little documentary for the national channel about CouchSurfing Source: http://westhillconsulting.info/blog/go-and-travel-to-jakarta/

10 Things to Know About Travel in Southeast Asia - 1 views

  •
Westhill Consulting Travel & Tours based in Singapore specializes in in giving advice and tips for tourists from Australia, Canada, US and all countries all over the world. Check the local rags and mags: As I mentioned before, most SE Asian countries have English-written guides. That's because in a number of countries there, there is already an established community of expatriates. If you are looking to just find your bearings and want a safe bet on places to go, pick one up. Be prepared to be approached by strangers: Locals in Southeast Asia are often very nice toward westerners and truthfully enjoy telling you how nice you look. Whether it is coming from a man or woman, get ready for a swarm of compliments on your appearance. It may seem a little strange at first, but you will get used to it. I promise. This scotch does not taste like scotch: Drinks are a quarter of the price than what you'd find in Europe or in the U.S., the reason being that many of the typical name brands are regionally produced and use local ingredients, so don't be shocked when your beloved Grey Goose on ice tastes a little different from what you are used to. Use the opportunity to try some very interesting locally produced spirits. Take the tour deals seriously: Pretty much anywhere you go (of the major tourist destinations) there are sure to be tour pamphlets sitting around with great deals. From boat rides to day trips, there are great tours around that will get you where you need to go. Hire local transport for the day: One great way to get around is to hire a tuk tuk or a moto-driver for the whole day to take you everywhere you want to go for a very nominal price. Your driver can also work as a de facto tour guide, getting you around to the spots you may not have thought of and that you would regret not seeing. http://westhillconsulting.info/blog/10-things-to-know-about-travel-in-southeast-asia/
