StoryPlace - The Children's Digital Library - 2 views

  •
The Story Place is a great source of digital stories that teachers and parents can use to introduce reading to young students. The digital stories contain audio of each story as well as the text of the story. The parent activities could be printed and sent home with students as a way to encourage reading at home.

There are many Web 2.0 tools that can be used to enhance teaching and learning in the classroom. It is important to understand that we are using all these tools to practise basic literacy skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening) and engage and motivate students. You may need to register to use the tool but it is free and if you use the same email address and password for all registrations it's simple. Please try them and let us know how you went by commenting. Your feedback will help us all.

Fantastic. :) Can refer to this before a math lesson to help me in my explanation process. Refer the ways in which someone else explains a concept.

Great youtube tutorial videos for the mathematics classroom with accompaning practice exercises. Khan has great delivery and has a video for almost every mathematical concept as well as a variety of other subject areas. It is a free site and may be used in the classroom as well as home. One possible integration would be as a way to flip the classroom allowing for more class time devoted to PBLs. A weakness is the videos do not always address questions and mistakes. This can be addressed in the comment section but doesn't always allow for immediate feedback. This site has been evaluated and recommended by UoP, ACPS and 60 minutes to name a few. It is an exemplary site.

Research Beyond Google: 119 Authoritative, Invisible, and Comprehensive Resources | OEDb - 0 views

  • Google, the largest search database on the planet, currently has around eight billion web pages indexed. That's a lot of information. But it's nothing compared to what else is out there. Google can only index the visible web, or searchable web. But the invisible web, or deep web, is estimated to be 500 times bigger than the searchable web. The invisible web comprises databases and results of specialty search engines that the popular search engines simply are not able to index.

This is a great site that I have used for many years. I have used it with elementary (5th grade) students several years However, teachers should know that you need to monitor and teach use of this site. It is essentially a social networking site and the kids will learn to use it as such very quickly. There are adult themed books as well as independent groups where inappropriate discussions take place. I have emailed Shelfari and asked if they plan to make an education version or limited account option for use with students. That being said I think it's a great platform for teaching those essential netiquette skills!

This is similar to LibraryThing, which I've used with high school and college students. http://www.librarything.com/ It's always great to come across different applications. Thanks.
