Introduction to Bloom's Taxonomy: Bloom's Taxonomy was created by Benjamin Bloom during the 1950s and is a way to categorize the levels of reasoning skills required in classroom situations. There are six levels in the taxonomy, each requiring a higher level of abstraction from the students. As a teacher, you should attempt to move students up the taxonomy as they progress in their knowledge

Techlearning > > Podcasting-A Tool to Motivate Teachers > July 1, 2008 - 1 views

In my second grade classroom, we will occasionally read articles from Ranger Rick during guided reading lessons, and during this particular week we just happened to be learning about an African mammal on the brink of extinction. One group of students had an assignment to write a letter to the world telling why this animal should be saved. As a teacher who routinely integrates technology into the classroom, my students are often curious about ways to share the knowledge that they gain. One particular student was especially curious about sending the letters to someone through email, so I decided to look up some information on the web. Within minutes, I had found a website with information about the animal and efforts being made to save it. For the following week, instead of taking part in indoor recess, this group of students chose to spend time learning more about this endangered animal on the computer. Watching them, I could see how much they were enjoying learning. I didn't think it could get much better, but I was wrong.

This analogy of equipping sailing vessels with steam engines works well as an illustration of technology being plugged into traditional classrooms.
  • We need to get the teacher into the game. The teacher needs to get in there and be part of the learning process, actively engaged in solving the problem with the students and learning with the students—not teaching but modeling learning with the students by functioning as an expert learner solving problems and constructing new knowledge with the students.
  • modeling the learning process

  • we will get the same result if we introduce modern learning technologies in our schools but do not prepare teachers to work in this new learning environment.   If we want to take advantage of these new technologies and the billions we are investing in equipment for our schools, we have to prepare teachers very differently than we have in the past. We have to change our own model of teaching and instruction in higher education.
  • Any organization that adopts a new technology without significant organizational change is doomed to failure. You have to change the organization. You cannot just add the technology. You have to actively work on changing the roles of the teachers, the roles of the students, the roles of the parents, and the roles of the administrators, and start to work toward building new relationships and new structures
  • Trying to introduce new technologies into schools without these changes would be similar to efforts in the sailing industry during the 1800s, when steam engines were installed in wooden sailing ships.
  • We will not get out of our wooden ship schools until we use communication technologies for two-way interactivity that allows us to collaboratively construct the learning experience and new knowledge.

The participatory classroom: Web 2.0 in the classroom. - 0 views

  •
Many young people use the interactive web, or Web 2.0, in their everyday lives, primarily for socialising and entertainment. Particularly empowering to learning are abilities to produce content on the world wide web, and a critical, reflective, metacognitive approach to using the web. In the face of a growing 'participation divide' between youth who have opportunities to engage in these higher order participatory and reflective literacies and those with fewer opportunities, there is an urgent need for teachers to expand literacy instruction. This article offers examples of classroom practices that draw on social elements of Web 2.0 that are favoured by youth to support less practised usages required for learning. Specifically, we describe ways of using new literacies and new forms of texts for locating and critically examining information, and ways of sharing and building knowledge within the participatory and creative landscape of Web 2.0.
