Podcast245: Technology Shopping Cart Podcast05 - Digital Citizenship and an I... - 0 views

  • Welcome to episode five of the Technology Shopping Cart podcast where educational innovation thrives on the food of creative ideas! This week Karen Montgomery, Vicki Allen and Wesley Fryer host an interview with Kristine Molnar of PBwiki. PBwiki is one of our favorite web 2.0 sites for creating collaborative wiki documents with teachers and students. After sharing our geeks of the week, we discussed digital citizenship and the ways teachers in different places are helping students as well as educators connect 21st century skills with digital citizenship skills including Internet safety, safe online collaboration, and netiquette. It is helpful to situate conversations about Internet safety within a broader discussion of digital citizenship, and insure the constructive and positive uses of collaborative digital technologies are also highlighted.

Wiki or Blog: Which is Better? - 0 views

  •
Both wikis and blogs provide teachers with a a dynamic process for integrating Web 2.0 technology in their science and math classes. These two types of online tools offer students a more engaging process for learning. Both are relatively easy tools which do not require teachers or students to learn any special program tools or computer skills. Their uses and applications are only limited by the vision and purpose for helping students learn.

Study: Should Shy Students Tweet Instead Of Raising Their Hand? | Edudemic - 0 views

  •
I was a shy student. It took me until middle school to actually feel comfortable enough around my classmates to speak up in class. Back then, there was no Twitter. Now, shy students are apparently preferring to communicate with their teacher via Twitter instead of raising their hand.

Educational Leadership:For Each to Excel:Preparing Students to Learn Without Us - 0 views

  • That rethinking revolves around a fundamental question: When we have an easy connection to the people and resources we need to learn whatever and whenever we want, what fundamental changes need to happen in schools to provide students with the skills and experiences they need to do this type of learning well? Or, to put it more succinctly, are we preparing students to learn without us? How can we shift curriculum and pedagogy to more effectively help students form and answer their own questions, develop patience with uncertainty and ambiguity, appreciate and learn from failure, and develop the ability to go deeply into the subjects about which they have a passion to learn?

This analogy of equipping sailing vessels with steam engines works well as an illustration of technology being plugged into traditional classrooms.
  • We need to get the teacher into the game. The teacher needs to get in there and be part of the learning process, actively engaged in solving the problem with the students and learning with the students—not teaching but modeling learning with the students by functioning as an expert learner solving problems and constructing new knowledge with the students.
  • modeling the learning process

  • Any organization that adopts a new technology without significant organizational change is doomed to failure. You have to change the organization. You cannot just add the technology. You have to actively work on changing the roles of the teachers, the roles of the students, the roles of the parents, and the roles of the administrators, and start to work toward building new relationships and new structures
  • we will get the same result if we introduce modern learning technologies in our schools but do not prepare teachers to work in this new learning environment.   If we want to take advantage of these new technologies and the billions we are investing in equipment for our schools, we have to prepare teachers very differently than we have in the past. We have to change our own model of teaching and instruction in higher education.
  • Trying to introduce new technologies into schools without these changes would be similar to efforts in the sailing industry during the 1800s, when steam engines were installed in wooden sailing ships.
  • We will not get out of our wooden ship schools until we use communication technologies for two-way interactivity that allows us to collaboratively construct the learning experience and new knowledge.

Introduction to Bloom's Taxonomy: Bloom's Taxonomy was created by Benjamin Bloom during the 1950s and is a way to categorize the levels of reasoning skills required in classroom situations. There are six levels in the taxonomy, each requiring a higher level of abstraction from the students. As a teacher, you should attempt to move students up the taxonomy as they progress in their knowledge

Coursekit Raises $5 Million to Reinvent the Classroom - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • Coursekit is a new tool that lets teachers and educators create mini social networks around individual courses and lectures.
  • The goal of the service, said Joseph Cohen, its co-founder and chief executive, is to take some of the most successful elements of social networking — especially the fluid exchange of ideas that comes natural to online interactions — to revitalize the education experience. Students are already accustomed to interacting online and supplementing their daily lives with the Web and social media. Why should that stop when it comes to learning? “Our education experience is truly offline,” he said. “We want to build what Facebook has done for your personal life, but for your school.”
  • Using Coursekit’s software, teachers can upload homework assignments, answer questions, grade work and facilitate discussions with their students. In addition, students can use the software to chat with one another, collaborate on projects and share relevant materials with their classmates

  • Coursekit is free to both the instructors and students that want to have access to it. The company says its main focus is attracting users, not making money

CANADA OR UK BETTER TO STUDY - 0 views

  •
Education in UK or Canada, which is better, has always been a topic of debate. But both the countries have continued to maintain their fascination for international students. Every country of the United Kingdom has separate education system under separate governments. Four UK universities have bagged slots in world's top ten universities. UK continues to remain the first preference of all international students.

This awesome interactive website is something that I will use during my unit on cells. What I like about this website is that it covers all three types of cells (animal, plant, and bacterial). For each type of cell, there is a tutorial which give students information and analogies to help them remember the parts. They also have a game and quiz for each type of cell. I will definitely use this to give my students another interactive visual of cells and their organelles.

Blendspace - 0 views

  •
Blendspace allows you to combine multiple types of digital content into a seamless lesson. You can add pictures, video, questions, examples, etc. I would use this in my room in order to check for understanding or to help students who need extra review of a topic. This is nice because students can move at their own pace through the lesson independently.
