Friending and Unfriending: A New Social Order? | Psychology Today - 0 views

  • According to my dictionary, a friend is variously defined as:A person attached to another by feelings of affection or personal regard.A person whom one knows, likes, and trusts.Someone with whom you share mutual knowledge, esteem, affection, and respect, along with a  degree of rendering service to in times of need or crisis.Desiring what is best for the other person.Being able to express sympathy and empathy and being honest with each other. It's funny, but I couldn't find a definition that espoused anything about "face-to-face" connections being a requirement for friendship. I don't see anything in the definitions that precludes having an electronic friendship. In fact, I don't see anything that stipulates that you have to have met the person live in the real world rather than knowing them in the virtual world.

Trench Warfare in the Age of The Laser-Guided Missile - 0 views

The historical development of spam fighting is allowing computer-aware criminals to take the upper hand in the fight against what has now evolved into a completely technologically and organizationally merged threat to public safety. If we do not change our strategic approach immediately, the battle, indeed even the war may be all but lost... Of late, much has been said in the popular and computer press about a vector that is annoying, but hardly critical in nature: 'Image spam'. Spammers have jumped on the new technology of 'image-only' payloads, which morph one pixel per message, rendering them unique, and traditional check-sum blocking strategies ineffective... Fortunately this fraudulent stock-touting scheme leaves a paper trail that has allowed for some successful prosecutions in the latter half of the year. Stock spamming, while popular at present time is likely to decline as legal actions increase...

O'Reilly -- What Is Web 2.0 - 0 views

  • Wikipedia, an online encyclopedia based on the unlikely notion that an entry can be added by any web user, and edited by any other, is a radical experiment in trust, applying Eric Raymond's dictum (originally coined in the context of open source software) that "with enough eyeballs, all bugs are shallow,"

  • Collaborative spam filtering products like Cloudmark aggregate the individual decisions of email users about what is and is not spam, outperforming systems that rely on analysis of the messages themselves.

  • t is a truism that the greatest internet success stories don't advertise their products. Their adoption is driven by "viral marketing"--that is, recommendations propagating directly from one user to another. You can almost make the case that if a site or product relies on advertising to get the word out, it isn't Web 2.0.

Decentralization on all levels. Even the notion an advertisement created and disperesed by a company becomes undermined. For it is too centralized and rigid, it cannot operate with the same subtelty and variation as can viral publicity.
