Viddler.com - webprog-4-3 - Uploaded by halavais - 0 views

This is a link to a helpful tutorial page that defines some of the types in database. none of the examples in the lecture are text, but in the challenge the data is primarily text which lead me to believe that the type should be text. I received an error message when doing this. As I searched to find troubleshooting help I found that the varchar type also includes text.

HTML Station--Welcome - 0 views

This site has an AOL 3.0 feel to it but regardless, the main page has links to step-by-step instructions on what you want to do with HTML. I was using it while I was working with my Wordpress page. I like the fact that it has split everything up into sections so you can access the page with what you want.

Puerto Rico: La Isla Del Encanto (NavBar) - 0 views

  •
Hello! I decided to do my 3 (well 4) page assignment on the beautiful island of Puerto Rico. I included a brief history as well as some of my favorite spots to visit. I was able to include a nav bar on the home page and used the colors found in the coat of arms. I'd like to try a tabbed nav bar however.

What's My Sign? - 0 views

Here is my site for the Sign challenge! A huge shoutout to Nancy for helping me debug the messy code I originally had written! In addition, I used this site for some ideas: http://www.2wap.org/forums/index.php?showtopic=4866&pid=32711&mode=threaded&start=. However, this site led me wrong in multiple ways! Citing it anyways to be safe!

The CSS wouldn't copy over to the php file. I couldn't figure that part out, since I copy/pasted the exact link line from my HTML. I don't know why it didn't work.
  •
The CSS is still there, it's just that it is only selecting elements that appear on the first page. The second page has none of those elements to select. Should change the selector to "body", since both pages have a "body" tag, and the design rules you have apply generally to the body anyway...

PHP 101 (part 1): Down the Rabbit Hole - 0 views

  •
As one of my classmates pointed out...sometimes it's easier to learn complicated things when they are "kindergatenized" Here I found a site which appempts to explain PHP at the very bare minimum. I found it to be long and wordy...but I am actually understanding it, slowly.
  •
Module 3 for me is beginning to shape up to be similar to Godfather III. At first I hated both but now I realize their value. OK, in this here bookmarked link, author Vikram Vaswani turns PHP into something akin to a nice novella with excellent screenshots as examples. This tutorial is engaging, friendly and filled to the brim with info.

A really nice, basic resource that explains PHP in a clear and understandable way. It makes a very nice complement to the instructional videos for the class.

Let's roll the dice! - 0 views

  •
After way too long of attempting to figure out how to make this page, the light bulb finally lit up (dim, but it turned on). Instead of just numbers rotating randomly, I incorporated images of dice. I also implemented CSS stylesheet for the background and text. Also, instead of a using the brower refresh button, I added my own :-)

Fibonacci Sequence - 0 views

  •
I think I'm finally starting to understand php. It's not the easiest language, thats for sure! (or is it!?) With that said, here is my Fibonacci Sequence up to 500. I looked a variety of different codes online, but didn't use just one. After looking at a whole bunch I realized there are quite a few ways to write this code. Which in my mind, only compicated matters more...
  •
Yes! It's true of most programming tasks: there are many ways to accomplish the same thing. In some ways it does complicate things, but it's also (though it may not feel like it now) makes it fun! It's especially good when you find a "good hack"--a shortcut that makes your code better, faster, shorter, and more simple. Congrats on this one, it's a hard program to puzzle out.

A Long Way GoneQuiz - 0 views

Oh my gosh, it works. After two days of trying to figure out why perfectly good code wouldn't work, Dr. Halavais told me that I had to zap gremlins in my PHP text, because the text was imported. Anyhow, I'm currently teaching my freshmen a book called A Long Way Gone, and since I need to find interactive ways to keep their interest buoyant, I thought this quiz might actually work in my own classroom. Thanks to Jen Rock and Dr. Halavais for their help in getting this accomplished.

This is my quiz, it is a five question quiz on the Televsion show Heroes. If I was at work I would totally take this quiz, considering that I am obsessed with this show. Both pages validate, the quiz page and the results page.

Quiz: Test your knowledge of Connecticut - 0 views

  •
A 5- question quiz about Connecticut. User can enter name, answer questions, see list of their answers as well as a list of the correct answers. Still trying to figure out how to total the score. Both pages validate. I tried to code in an error message if you failed to fill out one of the answers, but I couldn't get the code to validate, so I removed it with disappointment.

Introduction to PHP - 0 views

I know I already "bookmarked something relevant" this module but I couldn't resist sharing this one as well. It's a VERY basic PHP tutorial with great links -- and is broken into bullet points. Bullet points make me happy! Bullets, however, do not. Happy PHPing.

What time on the due date are the assignments due (morn, afternoon, midnight)? I anticipate getting assignments done in advance, but if ever one needed to be tweaked and resubmitted for credit I would like to know the exact time.
    • Alex Halavais

The last second of the marked day, EST, let's say.
  •
My understanding is: do as many assignments as you want, or think you need to do. As for points, doing enough assignments correctly to total 100 points per module will get you an A-. An A- will be upgraded to an A if you show consistent creativity. Only those with an A- qualify for the "Creativity Upgrade". A grade of B won't do it. If I explained anything incorrectly, someone please correct me. My own take on it? Learn code because you really want to learn code, show effort, and try to have some fun with it. :)

My 3-page site. Coming up with the content for these challenges seems to be my biggest challenge. I guess that's why they say "Content is king!" My first two pages feature photos, hyperlinks and text. The last page includes a embedded video that I uploaded to YouTube.

The Fibonacci Sequence is a mathematical series of numbers where each number is the sum of the two numbers before it. The website I bookmarked was created using a combination of html and php.

I added a comment to the viddler timeline. This comment is useful in terms of validation. When you go to validate your pages and you have included "POST" the page does not validate. For validation purposes you must enter it as "post".

Googled Xampp for Mac and came up with something called apachefriends.org. Saw a security warning in the documentation. Wondered if I could trust the site and the software.

Any particular pay web hosting company you would recommend? They all seem to have the same features and the same price...

My recommendation is the one I suggest here: NearlyFreeSpeech. It's a new host to me, but comes recommended, and does everything we need it to. I use Dreamhost for this (and most of my) sites. It's a solid host--and works pretty well. I'm not sure I love it, but moving costs (in time) are too high for me to choose to go elsewhere...
