Foundations of Semantic Web Technologies
Chapman & Hall/CRC, 2009, 455 pages, hardcover
ISBN: 9781420090505 (BibTeX). Semantic Web is a maturing field of technology that continues to be the emphasis of much focused research. This foundational text introduces the standardized knowledge representation languages for modeling ontologies operating at the core of the semantic web. To support the presentation of each language, the authors explain syntax and underlying intuitions through examples, with separate treatment of the underlying formal semantics. They cover RDF Schema, Web Ontology Language (OWL), rules, and query languages, such as SPARQL. The book also presents recent developments concerning the OWL 2 revision and the forthcoming Rule Interchange Format (RIF).
"nitiated by the Library of Congress, BIBFRAME provides a foundation for the future of bibliographic description, both on the web, and in the broader networked world. This site presents general information about the project, including presentations, FAQs, and links to working documents. In addition to being a replacement for MARC, BIBFRAME serves as a general model for expressing and connecting bibliographic data. A major focus of the initiative will be to determine a transition path for the MARC 21 formats while preserving a robust data exchange that has supported resource sharing and cataloging cost savings in recent decades."
The Structured Data Linter is a tool aiding webmasters and web developers to verify the structured data present in their HTML pages. Search engines use structured data to understand webpages more accurately and to present enhanced search results. The Linter understands the microdata, JSON-LD and RDFa formats according to their latest specifications. Note however that it does not guarranty that all consumers (e.g. search engines) will make use of all the structured data available in your page. The linter does not currently support microformats (contributions welcome).
Here's a great video presentation I found about the Semantic Web; I transcripted all the main parts here below.
Text transcription:
The Internet as we know it today is in an extending success: more than 1.300.000.000 (1,3 billions) people are connected to the Web across the globe.
In 2006, 161 EB of informations were created or replicated world wide.
IDC estimates the increase over 6 times this metric by 2010 - to 988 EB, or to 1 ZB a year.......
Two days ago Stephen Wolfram gave an early preview of his "computational knowledge engine" Wolfram Alpha at a talk at Harvard University.
The video of the whole presentation (1h 45min long) is here above, while down below you can find some highlights I transcripted from his speech.
The OWL Web Ontology Language is designed for use by applications that need to process the content of information instead of just presenting information to humans. OWL facilitates greater machine interpretability of Web content than that supported by XML, RDF, and RDF Schema (RDF-S) by providing additional expressive power along with a formal semantics.
The group's work is complete with the publication of OWL 2 (Second Edition). There may be new Errata and discussion on public-owl-dev@w3.org.
OntoWiki facilitates the visual presentation of a knowledge base as an information map, with different views on instance data. It enables intuitive authoring of semantic content, with an inline editing mode for editing RDF content, similar to WYSIWIG for text documents.
GoodRelations is the most powerful vocabulary for publishing all of the details of your products and services in a way friendly to search engines, mobile applications, and browser extensions. By adding a bit of extra code to your Web content, you make sure that potential customers realize all the great features and services and the benefits of doing business with you, because their computers can extract and present this information with ease.
Our aim is to track every government and corporate financial transaction across the world and present it in useful and engaging forms for everyone from a school-child to a data geek.
Wikicat is the bibliographic catalog used by the Wikicite and WikiTextrose projects. It will be implemented as a Wikidata dataset using a datamodel design based upon IFLA's Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records: final report (FRBR) [1], the various ISBD standards, the Library of Congress's MARC 21 specification, the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules' The Logical Structure of the Anglo-American Cataloguing Rules and Resource Description and Access (RDA), and the International Committee for Documentation (CIDOC)'s Conceptual Reference Model (CRM)[2]. The history and inter-relation of these various cataloging standards is described in RDA presentations.
You are invited to participate in The International Conference on Technological Advances in Electrical, Electronics and Computer Engineering (TAEECE2013) that will be held in Konya, Turkey on May 9-11, 2013. The event will be held over three days, with presentations delivered by researchers from the international community, including presentations from keynote speakers and state-of-the-art lectures.
"Ontobee.org : A linked data server designed for ontologies. Ontobee is aimed to facilitate ontology data sharing, visualization, query, integration, and analysis. Ontobee dynamically dereferences and presents individual ontology term URIs to (i) HTML web pages for user-friendly web browsing and navigation, and to (ii) RDF source code for Semantic Web applications. Ontobee is the default linked data server for most OBO Foundry library ontologies. Ontobee has also been used for many non-OBO ontologies."
"Semantic Science is a new community portal to support the development of Semantic Web technologies (guides/presentations, RDF/OWL ontologies, knowledge systems) to facilitate the management, integration and discovery of scientific knowledge."
