Information Workbench for a World Where All Data is Linked! Pursuing the goal to lower the entry barrier into the world of Linked Data and to leverage its benefits, the Information Workbench™ provides a Web-based open platform for Linked Data solutions in the enterprise.

The objective of the Linking Open Data (LOD) community is to extend the Web with data commons by publishing various open datasets as RDF on the Web and by setting RDF links between data items from different data sources.

The Data-gov Wiki is a project being pursued in the Tetherless World Constellation at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. We are investigating open government datasets using semantic web technologies. Currently, we are translating such datasets into RDF, getting them linked to the linked data cloud, and developing interesting applications and demos on linked government data. Most of the datasets shown on this page come from the US government's data.gov Web site, although some are from other countries or non-government sources.

The LOD Cloud contains more than 300 datasets. You can browse the datasets, search for the datasets of your interest, explore the dataset and other datasets linked to it. You can import it into the repository and link the resources to other data in the respository.

Here follows a quick introduction to the notions of Semantic Web, Linked Data and the Linking Open Data initiative.

RDF is a standard model for data interchange on the Web. RDF has features that facilitate data merging even if the underlying schemas differ, and it specifically supports the evolution of schemas over time without requiring all the data consumers to be changed. RDF extends the linking structure of the Web to use URIs to name the relationship between things as well as the two ends of the link (this is usually referred to as a "triple"). Using this simple model, it allows structured and semi-structured data to be mixed, exposed, and shared across different applications.

Following the workshop in Video on the Web, the goal of the Video in the Web activity is to make video a "first class citizen" of the Web. Video on the Web (and this includes audio, as the two are typically used together) has seen explosive growth, improving the richness of the user experience but leading to challenges in content discovery, searching, indexing and accessibility. Enabling users (from individuals to large organizations) to put video in the Web requires that we build a solid architectural foundation that enables people to create, navigate, search, link and distribute video, effectively making video part of the Web instead of an extension that doesn't take full advantage of the Web architecture.

This site is a demonstrator of the Information Workbench, a platform for Linked Data application development. This specification describes the FOAF language, defined as a dictionary of named properties and classes using W3C's RDF technology.FOAF is a project devoted to linking people and information using the Web. Regardless of whether information is in people's heads, in physical or digital documents, or in the form of factual data, it can be linked. FOAF integrates three kinds of network: social networks of human collaboration, friendship and association; representational networks that describe a simplified view of a cartoon universe in factual terms, and information networks that use Web-based linking to share independently published descriptions of this inter-connected world. FOAF does not compete with socially-oriented Web sites; rather it provides an approach in which different sites can tell different parts of the larger story, and by which users can retain some control over their information in a non-proprietary format.
