The Past and Future of Plagiarism - Plagiarism Checker - 0 views

  •
The internet has been the greatest breeding ground for creativity in human history, acting as the medium through which a unfathomable number of new works are published every day; from the shortest and most informal 'tweets' to 1000 page USPTO patents. Although this boom in creative work has been a blessing, it also has created a large problem in detecting and preventing plagiarism.

The Key To Making Free Music Services Work | paidContent - 3 views

  •
Services like Spotify and YouTube are crucial tools in helping the music industry transition from the 20th-century distribution business of selling units, to the 21st-century paradigm of monetizing consumption. On-demand, access-based services will be the foundation stone of the 21st-century music business. Added to that, the majority of consumers simply have no appetite for paying for digital music, certainly not on a subscription basis.  Free and subsidized services are quite simply part of the future.

How to connect to SkyDrive with WebDAV - and my Office 2010 awakening - Mike Plate - 2 views

  •
Actually, I stumbled upon this when I decided to try out Office 2010 beta. I haven't found any official documentation about how to connect to Windows Live SkyDrive with WebDAV (or any API), so I'm not sure how well supported this will be in the future. If you find any word about this from Microsoft, please let me know in the comments. The good news is that it works. The bad news is that it is very slow, but being 25 GB for free I guess you get what you pay for speed-wise (understandably).

The Secret Origin of Windows - 7 views

  •
Few people understand Microsoft better than Tandy Trower, who worked at the company from 1981-2009. Trower was the product manager who ultimately shipped Windows 1.0, an endeavor that some advised him was a path toward a ruined career. Four product managers had already tried and failed to ship Windows before him, and he initially thought that he was being assigned an impossible task. In this follow-up to yesterday's story on the future of Windows, Trower recounts the inside story of his experience in transforming Windows from vaporware into a product that has left an unmistakable imprint on the world, 25 years after it was first released.

DIASPORA* - 17 views

  •
Diaspora is the social network that puts you in control of your information. You decide what you'd like to share, and with whom. You retain full ownership of all your information, including friend lists, messages, photos, and profile details. "Share what you want, with who you want." Full Control: built-in If you take twenty photos at a party, you can show the three least-incriminating to your coworkers, while posting the whole set to your friends. Your coworkers can't find out that they're seeing the expurgated version. Future employers can't either. You can post updates to everyone, to just your close friends, to just your family, or to any other subset of your friends. It's easy to make these groups, called "aspects," and it's straightforward to share different things with different aspects. Diaspora doesn't expose your information to advertisers, or to games you play, or to other websites you visit. It's inherently private - you tell Diaspora who gets to see those pictures of your kids, and only those people will see them. Period. Choose a home, make an account, and invite your friends to join you! Take back your network.
