Curiosity as the edge of knowledge phenomenon that drives learning - The Learner's Way - 1 views

  •
We are driven by curiosity. It is an innately human quality that has driven us to explore, ask questions, investigate, wonder why and search for a deeper understanding. In a very fundamental way curiosity is the driver of all self-directed learning. It is our desire to find out more, unlock new knowledge and answer our questions (big ones and little ones) that compels us to learn. Sir Ken Robinson famously and provocatively asked "Do Schools Kill Creativity?". The same question might be asked about curiosity.

Wikis are Not Knowledge Management Tools | Zoli's Blog - 0 views

  •
The wiki becomes the primary platform to conduct work, the fabric of everyday business, where people create, collaborate, and in the process capture information. While not a Knowledge Management tool, the wiki resolves the KM-problem as a by-product.

The Right Organisational Culture: A Requirement? - 2 views

  • How? Small steps, most of them logical and obvious, such as: change performance appraisal guidelines so that knowledge sharing is taken into consideration find out about someone’s knowledge sharing habits not by checking the amount of posts on the intranet but by asking their peers (check for quality of contributions and willingness to help, for example) use knowledge audit questionnaires and interviews to gather data (obviously!) and to, simultaneously, emphasise the behaviours expected from staff have idea banks but make the idea cycle completely open and transparent so that ideas are owned and worked on by all those interested review the way the organisation rewards and recognises new ideas, new business, good results, etc..

Design processes for teaching « The Weblog of (a) David Jones - 1 views

  • Without question this design process should be informed by knowledge of pedagogy, but the process itself is worthy of description as there are differing options and perspectives.
  • Reigeluth (1983) defines instructional design as a set of decision-marking procedures that, given a set of outcomes for student to achieve and knowledge of the context within which they will achieve them, guides the choice and development of effective instructional strategies.
  • The learning theory used to inform instructional design has moved on from its behaviourist origins, moving through cognitivism, constructivism and slowly into connectivism.

  • Models, such as ADDIE, are most useful in the systematic planning of major revisions of an existing course or the creation of a new course. However, traditional university academics spend relatively little time in systematic planning activities prior to teaching an existing course (Lattuca and Stark 2009). A significant reason for this is that academics are not often required to engage in the development of new courses or major overhauls of existing courses (Stark and Lowther 1988). The pre-dominant practice is teaching an existing course, often a course the academic has taught previously. When this happens, academics spend most of their time fine tuning a course or making minor modifications to material or content
  • actual teaching and learning that occurs is more in line with the teacher’s implicit internalised knowledge and not that described in published course descriptions

More than knowing the right answer - The Learner's Way - 2 views

  •
Being wise is about so much more than knowing the right answer. Indeed, it can be argued that knowing the right answer can be an obstacle to learning and understanding. As we move further into times where knowledge is ubiquitous and yet truth is increasingly hard to find, merely knowing the right answer can be an impediment.

Thinking in the Wild - Thinking routines beyond the classroom - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Despite this being a 'thinking' conference, despite us all being advocates for structured and scaffolded models of thinking, not one group had applied any thinking routines, utilised a collaborative planning protocol or talked about applying an inquiry model or design thinking cycle. It wasn't that we didn't know about them. It wasn't that we don't know how to use them. It wasn't that we don't value them. We had all the knowledge we could desire on the how to and the why of a broad set of thinking tools and anyone of these would have enhanced the process, but we did not use any of them. Why was this the case and what does this reveal about our teaching of these methods to our students?

Shifting towards student centred learning - The Learner's Way - 0 views

  •
Particular patterns of pedagogy have been of most interest to me across the years, particularly those that shift the focus from what the teacher does to what the student does. With this shift comes an emphasis on understanding how students learn and with this knowledge in mind developing learning experiences that will allow them to develop their skills for learning.
