    This week I spent three days in Brisbane attending the Australian Association of Mathematics Teachers' national conference. The theme of the conference was "Why Maths?" and along with 500 other mathematicians, we looked to find inspiring answers to this provocative question beyond the classroom. Now in its ninth year, The Future of Education is an international conference that attracts educators from around the world and across all domains touched by education. The conference is an inspiring two days of discussion and sharing, with the city of Florence, the centre of the Renaissance, providing a constant reminder of what might be possible when creativity and critical thinking combine. From Good to Great: Writing well by Thinking like Authors - The Learner's Way - 0 views

    A common challenge for students and teachers is how to develop a great idea for a piece of writing. Too often students struggle with the process of finding inspiration for their writing. They have a vague idea for the story they hope to tell, but all too quickly it transforms into a list of events with little or no detail. The goal here is to provide our students with a process to use during the planning process. The hope is that by identifying the type of thinking required during the early phases of ideation and to focus their attention on details, that the stories our students subsequently compose will be more enjoyable to read. Hopefully, this process helps.

Learning about change from a home cooked meal. - The Learner's Way - 0 views

    Last week I decided that a good home cooked meal was in order. Lacking inspiration it turned to a recipe book I had been gifted the previous Christmas and found what appeared to be a tasty and nutritious option. I read on with enthusiasm and was soon imaging myself dining on this wholesome meal. If the end result looked half as good as the glossy picture that accompanied the recipe, I would be in luck.

EdTech Startup Papermache Aims To Inspire Better Online Research - 1 views

  • academia has been reluctant to accept internet sources as legitimate in intellectual discussion. As a result, students have been forced to use antiquated and difficult methods of finding relevant information online.
  • Los Angeles startup Papermache (site will soon be here) will combine a social network with a digital portfolio, allowing university students to legally share their graded research papers with a peer community. Users will read, up/downvote, discuss, and cite the findings and perspectives of their peers in a safe and collaborative environment. It could become the go-to destination for finding and using amazing, relevant information by harboring an active community of research and researchers.

  • A first for undergraduate academic publishing, Papermache will utilize Creative Commons licensing (denoted by the “.cc” in Papermache.cc) to its users who upload content. Adding intellectual property rights to work establishes ownership and gives legal protection to combat cheating. “On Papermache,” said Benjamin, “we want to make it easier to not cheat than to cheat, since convenience is a main cause of plagarism. Therefore, we created built in citation capabilities that – in a highlight and two clicks – gives credit to original authors and keeps content consumers legal.”

    This site will allow university students to legally share their graded research papers using a "cc" licence. Apparently they want to make it easier to not cheat than to cheat (by providing built in citation capabilities) - I guess that remains to be seen.

Why I built a wooden periodic table in my spare time. - 0 views

    Just over two years ago a group of teachers decided there Science Lab needed a signature piece to promote an interest in scientific inquiry. Inspired by a display at Questacon they embarked on a project to create a display to showcase the Periodic Table. After a three month journey into cabinetry and problem solving it is ready and this is the story of how it was made and why.

Moodle: e-learning's Frankenstein - 2 views

  • Moodle’s pedagogic pretensions A lot of rot is spoken about Moodle supporting a ‘constructivist’ approach to learning
  • That was always a utopian dream. This Vygotsky-inspired babble is only really spouted by academics with too much time on their hands. It’s really just a standard collection of learning management tools with no real pedagogic innovation or intent. There’s nothing in Moodle that wasn’t, or isn’t, in other LMSs or VLEs if you will.
  • Educationalists love to talk about learner-centric, constructivist models of learning but usually default back into a didactic, lecture-driven, ‘I teach-you learn’, behaviour. Stray too far from the current model and any LMS will collapse into a soup of collaborative connectivity
