I want to talk to you about a recent article I just read about a financial advisor stealing their client's money. I want to make sure that you can avoid those same problems. We already know about Bernie Madoff and the issues that he's caused through all the ponzi schemes but they still exist today and you really do have to watch out for yourself. There's a recent article talking about a gentleman in Minnesota that stole about a million dollars from his clients over the last two years which is a lot of money. One of the things that he did is he basically took the money, put it into his own checking account, and he used it. Well even one scenario, he took $100,000 from a client, turned it around and went and bought a Maserati. This is a really, really nice car. How To Avoid Financial Fraud I want to make sure you can protect yourself from those same potential problems. There's some things you can do to make sure you will avoid those issues. The first thing to do is do a broker check or make sure they are a registered investment advisor or an investment advisor that is registered with the securities exchange commission. What you can do is you can go to brokercheck.com. At brokercheck.com you can enter in the person's name or even their firm to make sure they are registered. Another good site to go to is investor.gov. It does basically the same thing that brokercheck does and even while you're there, you can see what type of report will come up as far as if they have any blemishes, if they have any problems in the past, are they an advisor that has a lot of disputes. Right there will give you a lot of information but also some red flags. If they are not registered as an investment advisor though the securities exchange commission, they're not allowed to do any trading of stocks, bonds, mutual funds, exchange rate funds and really they're not allowed to give you much financial advice.

Justin Paperny: Let's jump right in with your experience through Miami Federal Prison Camp. You wrote a guest blog on the White Collar Advice site. Michael S.: Well, Miami itself just outside of the world of prison sort of operates on its own set of rules. It's certainly South America within the United States. On top of that, when you get to the prison itself, you're a population that is less white collar than many of the other prison camps plus the fact that it's attached to a low security prison means a lot of inmates transition relatively early on from the low to the camp, so you have a population that's different, and as a result of that, you have different stringencies imposed on the inmates by staff. Justin Paperny: Okay, so we'll get into those stringencies in a minute. Let's first talk about how you got to the federal prison camp in Miami. The majority of my clients, our clients, self surrender to prison, but on occasion, they're remanded to custody in part because of the case or the judge. Tell us how you actually got to the federal prison camp.

A lot of these retirement calculators that you can use online, they make too many assumptions. A lot of them use fixed rate of returns, and if you were around, which I assume you were, in 2001 and 2008, you would know that the market doesn't just go at a fixed rate of return at 8%. There are going to be bumps and hills along the way. That's why when you use too simple of a calculator, it may give you a false sense of security. The reason why a lot of these other retirement calculators do not work is because they don't actually look at your overall plan. I'm not just talking about the free ones you can use with your 401(k) plans, but the ones that even that some financial advisors use aren't going to look at everything like social security. The benefit with some of these financial retirement calculators is they will actually put your social security calculations in with your overall retirement plan. If you are going to be using one, make sure that you use one that's going to have that social security ability to plug into your overall retirement plan. Minneapolis Financial Planner

Prison consultant In this video, I touch on lessons learned from 100 career lectures at USC. I also share details of a call I received from a client's lawyer. The lawyer opened the call by mocking me, essentially saying that while our client thinks you are the "top federal prison consultant", I am not sure that is possible because you only served 18 months in federal prison. Not only did this lawyer mock my credentials, he questioned a strategy I suggested to help our client serve the shortest sentence in the most favorable prison. Rather than argue with him, I explained why the strategy works, and why it should be implemented. Evan, our client, was adamant about implementing the strategy.
