"Comcast says the cable giant is expanding the number of free Wi-Fi hotspots available to the company's east coast customers. According to Comcast, they've activated 2,500 additional hotspots throughout eastern Massachusetts and southern New Hampshire in locations Comcast found to be the highest-traffic regions. Comcast followed on the heels of Cablevision in 2010 and began offering free Wi-Fi to customers in the hopes of offering a little something extra to users in their battle against Verizon FiOS. Comcast customers can sign in wherever they see the "Xfinity WiFi" SSID."

"The decline of DSL in the US has life tough for the phone companies - who in total lost 70,000 subscribers during the second quarter of 2012. Winner: cable companies in general and Comcast in specific as 260,000 new folks signed up for broadband in the US."

"The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) is working to connect rural households to broadband through the Connect America Fund. The Fund provides capital to private sector companies in order to help shoulder the cost of building out broadband networks to those homes. However, two of the largest service providers have opted out of the the free money saying that they would prefer to focus their attention elsewhere. One provider, Frontier Communications is stepping up to the plate citing significant business value in bringing these households online, a view which raises more questions about whether AT&T, Verizon, and Comcast are creating artificial network scarcity in order to provide a better picture for shareholders at the expense of American competitiveness."
