Today's guest blogger is Audrey Watters, a technology journalist specializing in education technology news. She has read all 100+ pages of the National Education Technology Plan released by the U. S. Department of Education last November, and she has summarized it below.

This is Chesterfield County's Master Technology Plan. Since our new technology director, Adam Seldow, Chesterfield has been experiencing a plethora of 'new' technology treats as noted in our plan. It's almost exciting.

This national tech plan purports to outline five essential components "of learning powered by technology" to get us to a 2020 goal of having "the highest proportion of college graduates in the world." Learning, Assessment, Teaching, Infrastructure & Productivity

This website displays a series of audio-visual resources regarding the history of technology from different perspectives. There are some that are more relevant for our purpose and others that could just be informative. Here I list the ones, that in my opinion are worth to see, and a brief description of each one. * Old compact computer advert: If you just want hear a quick joke about how and old computer is compared to fish, you should watch * Peter Hirshberg: the web and TV a sibling rivalry: A more elaborate talk in a conference in 2007. The speaker describes in 31 minutes how TV and technology have been connected in the past 60 years. He addresses the issue from various perspectives (entertainment and financially) and how computers were developed for a specific purpose after War World II. Additionally, he describes briefly the evolution of computers and TVs in the past years. * Internet in 1994: It displays some uses of Internet as a resourceful tool for marketing, shopping, accessing information, interact and much more. * The next generation: It is a simple, sort of power point, presentation with captions regarding some important event in the history of computers. * Museum of Technology in Berlin * Early technology TV programs. * The Microsoft Way: information regarding the history of this company.

Very detailed but concise timeline of every event related to technology in several fields... I loved they mention of one of my fav movies: "1999: The release of the movie "The Matrix" once again steps up the computer generated graphics technology field." Always thought movies have played an important role in the advance of technology... Movies make people dream about things that are not inspired by our daily lives...

I am amazed at how much was developed in such a short space of time. I am also impressed that Queen Elizabeth II becomes the first "Head of State" to write an email message..... and whatever happened to Netscape!!!

This blog post highlights the lack of scaffolding to teachers. There is a great quote from Leading for Instructional Improvement that refers to "Reciprocal Accountability" describing the responsibility school leaders have to provide the same differentiated learning to their teachers as the teachers are expected to give to their students.

I can so relate to this. As a future leader, I embrace it! It will be interesting to see this acheivement gap narrow as younger teachers who were raised a healthy diet of Twitter, Facebook (that is already old-isn't it?), Skype, etc. jump into the technology whirlwind without a bump. Seriously, have you seen tweens to 20 somethings even go into a restaurant without their cell phones placed carefully beside their utensils?

Some interesting tips from Scholastic. I especially like their last tip - learn from a kid. We so need to understand how kids are using tech not only to engage them, but because they also do stuff with it that's not even on our radars.

This is a link to a word document that details the state of Connecticut's technology plan. They have the typical mentions of leadership vision etc..., but also some other buzz words and ideas that peaked my interest. I was impressed with their mention of striving to provide all of the families with equal access to technology at home to support learning and moving more toward student directed learning as opposed to teacher directed learning among other things. If they can indeed insight these changes, they will be well on their way to integrating 21st century skills in their school systems. Good food for thought!

The problem of technological ephemeratti- After all, it's only a tool, not a fundamental skill as some would suggest.

Busy directors and program managers may feel that they don't have time for technology planning or that technology planning is too complicated. However, the creation of a technology plan is an important way to stay aligned with the program's needs and to procure adequate funding.
