"As technology gets better, will society get worse?" This article takes a unique approach to answering this question. It incorporates elements of theory, logic, and evolutionary perspective to hypothesize how technology may change society as we evolve (or "self-evolve," as the author suggests). This is a great article for those interested in/studying sociology, the physical sciences, and (obviously) technology.

The positive and negative effects of technology.

When we think technology, we mostly relate it to the internet. The computer era has certainly transformed many areas in society. But, for every action, there is an opposite and equal reaction. In spite of all the positive influences technology has brought on society, we can not ignore the other side of the coin.

Author explores managements theories from Classical F. W. Taylor to Modern, late 19th century through 21st century. The author provides an overview of transition periods. The article suggests Western modern society cannot continue order and control methods going forward. The article reasons that Eastern society cultivates more freedom, innovation, creativity that organizations will need for competitive advantage.

I find it interesting to consider not only my society, but the effects of technology on other societies.

Another fascinating article about the existential impact of technology on society. The author asserts that technology exploits our natural inclinations toward mindlessness, potentially leading to a society devoid of mindful relationships, behavior, interactions, and presence. Blends elements of neuroscience, technology, and philosophy…perfect for anyone studying/interested in these subjects.

I am always on the lookout for stories featuring past predictions of the future impacts of technology on society and how closely they mirrored reality. So I was quite happy to find a couple of recent articles, one in BusinessWeek and the other in the discussing technology predictions made by the CIA in 1962 and by a group of futurologists in 1988.

Really interesting study that examines an unusual side of technological effects on society. A dense read, but worth a scan through the data and findings.

As wonderful as Technology is, society is being warped into a tech frenzy. Not being able to stay "away" from gadgets is becoming more and more abnormal. It's a common joke with me, that our phones, which coincidentally include, email, social media, texting, and more, even tend to come with us to the bathroom...its becoming WAY too much and people need to realize there are more important things to do than continue to stay connected ALL the time.

The first part discusses a talk he gave at the Chiba Institute of Technology in Japan and touches on the Buddhist view of technology and its relationship with society. The Dalai Lama sees both positive and negative aspects of technology and shares his perspective with characteristic thoughtfulness. Nice piece for those interested in Buddhism, religious studies, sociology, or technology.

This in-depth article looks at how technology impacts teens in our society and what this impact may have on human potential in the future (the year 2020). Based on the idea that the brains of those under 35 will be wired differently because of technology, the authors draw on a variety of sources to explore how our potential as people may be effected. Good information for those interested in technology and the digital world, child development, and social psychology.

A question that often comes up when talking about the effects technology has on society and the use of our brains. I'm not sure I agree with the psychologist that wrote this. The statement at the end mentioning technology allows our brains to free up space to devote to more important things may be questionable. I'm not sure if memory in our brains is like the hard drive on a computer. Would be interesting to read an opposing viewpoint to this.

3D printing is looking like another disruptive technology that can significantly change our society. It will allow hobbyists and other people of fairly modest means to have access to a wide range of manufacturing capabilities. It will also probably make copyrights harder to enforce.
