I posted this site for everyone who would like to keep a private Journal - electronically! The site gives you a realistic, "leather bound" journal with lined paper in it which you can use for notes, thoughts, feelings, lists, story ideas or anything else that you would like to write about. You can keep it private or you can share it if you wish. It's saved in the "Cloud" so wherever you are, there it is! It's free for a good basic version and $19 per year for the full blown "Pro" version with all the bells and whistles. Enjoy!

Fiona, this site is awesome! I have already started my own journal and am considering going pro. Thanks for finding and sharing this site.

Nieman Reports | Digitization and the News - 0 views

  •
In much the way refrigeration changed food production and consumption, digitization potentially changes everything about the manner in which we produce and consume news. All presumptions about its freshness and perishability vanish. For most of the 20th century, the public had to follow unfolding news, catching it as it presented itself or losing it forever.

This one is old too! but still very interesting I think.

This site was one that I found by accident and it looks very interesting. It is a tool for visually mapping out projects and ideas as well as a collaboration tool (it integrates with Google docs). I haven't used it yet, but the video overview looks fantastic - check out the video! Create, share and collaboratively work on mind maps with MindMeister, the leading online mind mapping tool.

That's funny!!! I was just going to post this website!!! You beat me to it! Well you know what they say about great minds!!! :)
  •
Yes! I use it ALL the time and thought it would be great for "our library"! The site is a great way to check on how to do things correctly or to remind yourself if you are doing something right. It is a great resource to use again and again for researching formatting, etc.

This post is for the person, like me who has used the same program (Word) for years and is looking to expand their horizons! OpenOffice.org 3 is the leading open-source office software suite for word processing, spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more. It is available in many languages and works on all common computers. It stores all your data in an international open standard format and can also read and write files from other common office software packages.

I am using this in place of the power point template that Sherri posted for one of our final projects. It is a greaat place. Easy to use, lots of choices. I have an old computer and don't have power point so this was a great option.

This site actually helps with both MLA and APA. It works with your MS word to keep it in the correct format as you create it and does most of the tough citing work for you.

This is primarily an academic research tool (recommended by Dave MacCourt at the UMass Library.) Since it works with multiple sources outside acedemia (including wikkis) it would be a great way to organize sources for news/magazine articles.
  •
A personal research assistant. Zotero is the only research tool that automatically senses content, allowing you to add it to your personal library with a single click. Whether you're searching for a preprint on arXiv.org, a journal article from JSTOR, a news story from the New York Times, or a book from your university library catalog, Zotero has you covered with support for thousands of sites.

vRecorder - 0 views

The vRecorder reminded me of all the movies wherein someone had a secret recording device in their pocket to frame the bad guy. This is a tool I imagined existed, but now seeing it in action, its usefullness to the journalist (specifically taping phone interviews and framing bad guys) is limitless.

A sign of the times - 1 views

After reflecting on this article, I wonder what it would have been like if two legendary stations of my youth had merged. How would that have changed the lsitenership and the market itself??? Weird!

"If you're interested in working in the media, doing an internship while you're in college is an absolute must. You can likely get academic credit for it. You may even get paid for it. Most importantly, you will gain valuable hands-on experience that will impress prospective employers and give you an edge over other applicants when you're applying for your first job."[Cubreporters.org/internships.html]

From the website: "Scrivener is a powerful content-generation tool for writers that allows you to concentrate on composing and structuring long and difficult documents. While it gives you complete control of the formatting, its focus is on helping you get to the end of that awkward first draft."

I shared this because I thought classmates who love writing might be interested in seeing the different types of writing contests that Fish sponsors each year. The resulting Anthology is a treat for readers and writers! The 2011 Fish Anthology was launched by Brian Turner on 6th July, in Bantry, Co Cork, Ireland, during the West Cork Literary Festival Fish is an open door that's inviting writers to walk through it.It has to be encouraged, celebrated, congratulated.

The Journal of Electronic Publishing: Welcome - 0 views

It is commonplace that pornography is the avant-garde of all media. When new technologies arise, the pornographers are there first, too. Every time there has been a significant shift in marketplace rules, even if the technology is broadly unchanged, the pornographers are the first to figure it out.
  •
Outdated (2000), but interesting to see how technology is changing journalism and to see where we were just 10 years ago.
