United Streaming - 0 views

I like this website because although it doesn't specifically offer Family and Consumer Ed. curriculum lesson plans; I am excited to try "Architects in Action" This lesson will not only help build my Careers Unit but also be a catlyst for adding cross-curricular activities in Family and Consumer Ed.

We used United Streaming at a previous school district I worked at. There were some great video resources. It was pretty expensive, but well used. I do however think that there are so many free sites out there that we can find some great information and videos to enhance our curriculums as well.

Great resource for students to find images to help enhance their work.

Clip art is great for my 6th graders because it is easy for them to search in the different categories as opposed to searching Google images.

Students can use this site to find data and statistics on almost any subject. For example, a student could enter "Wisconsin" in the search bar and find out anything from population to the lowest point in the state. I even typed in my name, and found that there are just over 888,000 Sarahs expected to be alive today. This site is informative as well as interesting!
  •
That sounds like a fun website. Possibly a great website for those students who may need to be challenged more than the others. I bet some kids would really get into this site! Thanks for sharing, Sarah!

Multi Media Contests - 0 views

  •
This site hosts contests for users in various catagories. We utilize the photoshop contests to challenge the students on new creative projects. The site has many different catagories so it allows students many choices and options so they can choose something they are interested in. I mostly utilize this with independant study students; have them choose a catagory and it has a deadline to submit final work, and then i evaluate based on the tools and techniques they utilized.

The Daily Cafe - 0 views

  •
This site has been created by the 2 Sisters, Gail Boushey and Joan Moser. They are responsible for the literacy approaches of The Daily 5 and The Cafe. The site has a wealth of free information, including videos, to help teachers implement the Daily 5 and Cafe techniques in their classroom. The Sisters also have a free e-mail tip of the week that you may sign up for. For even more information, teachers may subscribe to the site. The site does not provide activities for students to complete online, however, the Daily 5 and Cafe are designed to help students practice, review, and apply their knowledge of literacy skills in the classroom through the use of centers, small group work, and one-on-one teacher conferencing.

Laura, Thanks for reminding me about this site. I've been struggling with conferencing in a meaningful way with students, and also with assessment. There are some resources here I haven't seen. Are you doing CAFE?

Good source to find video to use as an advanced organizer. I wish I had used this last Monday to show students video of Sonoran Wildlife before we read a selection set in the desert.

Vdeo Modeling - 0 views

  •
Video modeling has long been used in sports. Educators can use video modeling and video self modeling (VSM) to address problem behaviors, daily living skills, reading fluency, articulation disorders, selective mutism, and social skills training. A Meta-Analysis of Video Modeling and VSM Interventions (Bellini & Akullian, 2007) determined that video modeling met criteria for an Evidence Based Practice. This website has links to steps for Implementation and and an implementation checklist. Using video, helps the learner focus his/her attention on instructional cues and salient contextual cues.

National Library of Virtual Manipulatives - 0 views

  •
This website offers many manipulatives to help students understand, practice and review math concepts. I particularly like the fraction manipulatives. Some of my students have difficulty perceiving fractions and I believe this will be an excellent tool for exploration, practice and review.
  •
The idea behind this website is very interesting to me, and after playing with it a bit, I did find some of the manipulatives useful. However, many of them I found to be quite cumbersome. I was really excicited about the base ten blocks manipulatives for helping my students add and subtract, and once I figured it out, it was great. However, I had to read the help directions to get to that point. If I was able to spend the time showing my students how to use these, I think it'd be a wonderful tool. However, I was hoping I'd be able to simply direct my students and their parents to this site so they could use it for help at home. I'm afraid that many of the parents would not take the time to read the help area to figure it out, and I know my students wouldn't (or wouldn't understand them if they did). So while I was initially impressed with the idea of this site, I might search for something a bit more user friendly.

Google Sites allows you to create and share webpages. Google Sites is set up to help you create a web page (easily it states), collect your information all in one place, and control who can view it and edit it, which is a lot like Google Docs. There is also a learn more link where you can view a quick overview video to help get you started: http://www.google.com/sites/help/intl/en/overview.html This would be a great resource tool for collaborating on a group project.

Flashcard Exchange - 0 views

  •
This website has many collections of flashcards ranging from basic sight words, Spanish vocabulary to studying to be a CNA. With this resource teachers and students can make virtual flashcards. Parent volunteers could easily monitor student practice of basic sight words and record words that need more practice. Teachers would no longer need to search for baggies of flash cards. Parents could practice with students at home.

This rather large (112 pages) .pdf is a unit on cells that also serves as a very good introduction to the microscope.  It compares well to similar AIMS units.

This is an interactive map of the world. Students click once on places they have been, twice on places they have lived, and three times on places they want to visit. Virtual Tourist also has additional interactive maps on their main website. Need to register with the site to get full access to all features.

A great website for teachers, students, and parents. Teachers can get lesson plan ideas, additional resources to complement Scholastic News subscriptions, order items and books for the classroom, and print mini-books and other reproducibles. Students can have discussions with others who are reading the same or similar books and learn about new books and authors. Parents can find activities for their child and even learn about how their child's reading develops.
